Regular crossover or High steer?????

What is your preference? I am leaning towards crossover on my D44, but high steer is interesting. Any benefits of using one over the other, besides the obvious clearance gains of the high steer?

well It is either crossover and high steer or crossover by itself. I dont think ive seen anyone with high steer and stock steering :eek1: :P

High steer is good for getting your components out of the way of rocks, but i dont think most people on the forums run it (may be wrong). It is a fair amount of extra stress on the top of your knuckles so that translates into more frequent maintence on your balljoints, etc. I dont think it is worth it, just stick to plain crossover

I would not put high steer on a D44 unless you plan some upgraded knuckles. If you are not doing any serious rock crawling then high steer is not worth it. I have been running crossover with my tie rod in the stock location for years and finally bent my heavy duty tie rod on it's last run. Just bowed it up a little bit but it took the whole truck slamming down on it. I plan to make a aluminum one sometime this year and see how well it holds up unless I just go full hydro.
 
NorCal, I thought that was obvious, but I'll make sure I word things a little better in the future., Anyway, after doing a little more research on it, I see that there is more of a downside to using high steer with the cross over instead of crossover alone.
Thanks for the insight Wayne. I'm not doing anything serious, just a trail rig, so crossover it is.
 
I've been useing a high-streer setup on a dana 44 for years.
Ofcoarse, I up graded to aftermarket knuckles too, and I'm only running a 35"tire and a 4" lift.
And yes, you can get about 3 to 4 years out of good ball joints [ keep them greased] but, it's my toy, not daily driven.
 
run normal x over and then if you start bending your tie rod alot go to full high steer, since I rockcrawl alot, its full high steer for me but I was xover for many years on my 3/4 ton axles.
 
I run standard crossover with a beefy tie rod. I landed on it once in awhile and bang it into things, but so far it is still straightish :wink1: With 40's my tie rod is pretty high off the ground so I can't justify spending the $$ for hi-steer right now.

High steer adds a little challenge to adding hydro assist as well.
 
So in everyone's varied opinions, who has the best kit for crossover steering? Most complete?
 
Aha! so the kits are not so complete then. I would like to do this cause my steering is way sloppy.

You only need the driver side arm for high steer. If you do standard crossover and replace the tie rod all your components will still be replaced.

Ok, think I got it now. Buy the kit, and then tierod, and I am good to go since I will not be doing a high-steer kit. Thanks

Yup and I believe both SKY and ORD also sell the needed Pitman arm for crossover.
 
Sky has some nice products. Haven't seen their site before. Thanks for the link. Going with basic crossover, after all is said and done, i really don't need to go to the added expense of high steer.

I don't run high steer on my D44 because I already have enough trouble with ball joints that I don't want to add to it. I'd contact Trevor at http://www.wfoconcepts.com and ask give him the information about your rig - he's a stand up guy and offers great products a great prices.

also need a pass side knuckle that will take a pass side steering arm. = flat top knuckle.

then if not already to take the new arm will need this service. http://www.jnutter.com/index.html

so make sure you read / read / read before purchase of products.

need 2wd sector shaft to swap in your steering box or a whole 2wd box to swap on. then there is diffrent hose/input setups over the years.

then the knuckle has tie rod on top or on bottom .

read up a lot first. ( search button ) :D
 
I vote low steer with heavy duty tierod. I have run it hard for years and only have very slight bends in my tierod which is 1.5" .375 wall. To get those very slight bends though I have run 37's hard and crawled the crap out of my truck driving by brail.

I have Sky's HD tall arm and like it alot. They have good service and good products. Whatever you do do NOT use spacers between the knuckle and steering arm unless they are keyed to either the knuckle or the arm. If they are not you will break the studs at some point in time, and replacing broken steering arm studs on the trails sucks even if you have the right tools.
