Did my Reid knuckle swap today in preparation for my ORD crossover. Bought a CPP 50014 2WD Steering box from Summit. There was a 50004 steering box, in the box marked 50014, so that didn’t get put on this weekend. Looked like the correct box except it mounted inside the framerail.

I torqued my ball joint connections down to 100 ft lbs and the preload to 40 ftl lbs. Is that correct? Lateral knuckle movement sure is tight.

If you disconnect the draglink, then use a fish scale to hook the hole for it and pull, I believe it's supposed to take 15-20 lb of force to move it.

I’m confident it’s above that… can anyone confirm the torque settings I used?

Really the torque setting is like a guideline is what I was getting at. Tighten or loosen it until it's at that amount of pull.
Quite a few guys on here have been through that where the torque setting wasn't quite right.

But to answer the question, yes that sounds like what the book says for the torque setting.

The parts issue merry-go-round continues... Got box #2 in from Summit, same problem... box says 50014, 50004 (car) is what's inside. CPP said they have none in stock, Summit says 10+ but something isn't adding up here.

The CPP box is a 14:1 ratio. Assuming they have some kind of inventory problem and can't ship the correct one, I'm going to ask for a Borgeson unit that is 12.7:1 for the same price.

Before I go shoot my mouth off... would a 12.7:1 be a negative somehow on a 15.5x35 tire'd K5?

Thanks
Charlie

I got the A1 cardone 2wd reman box from Summit, and I'm very happy with it.
It's crazy how much you get used to a worn out box, swapping was a night and day difference.

Since I'm doing this for a crossover conversion, you typically can't us a K5 4WD core for a new 2WD box. NAPA was being picky about the rear brake shoes I was returning for a core. I was uneasy about going the cheap route, so figured this CPP route was next.

Is 14:1 the stock ratio? I remember a thread here from WAY BACK where a guy wanted quicker ratio and went to a bit of effort to get it (I can't remember if he had to swap the guts from a car box into a truck housing or was able to change the mount or something). I just remember he ended up going back to stock, but not the exact reason. Good luck searching.

The stock box is like 16-17:1 I've read, CPP is 14:1 and the Borgeson is 12.7:1

Summit supposedly confirmed box contents, there's another one on the way.

Summit finally got the right box delivered on the 3rd try, it's installed and hooked up via ORD linkage, but I decided to go ahead and also do my tilt column swap since I had the shaft out. Installing a Borgeson telescoping shaft with their u-joints on each end. One of the reasons I bought the CPP box was there was no core swap required (Redhead like most, required a core of what you were buying, which I didn't have) and they generally have a pretty good name in the Tri-5 community (my other ride) for their conversion boxes.

I watched a couple videos on doing this swap... I pulled my inner fender and it has made everything so much easier vs doing it from above. About a dozen bolts and it's out.
