relocated battery question/opinion

In the late 'fifties, people started to notice that the left side springs were going faster than the right. The wizards at GM discovered that they'd put the generator, starter, and battery all on the driver's side (where someone's bound to be sitting if anyone's in the vehicle at all). That's why they moved stuff around. There's a weight related reason why they put the battery exactly where they did. Unless you've got a really good reason for moving it (as per the photo someone sent that's got two nicely balanced batteries evenly distributed) I'd grind out what's left of the old tray and weld or bolt in a nice new bigger and stronger tray.

With all due respect, there are flaws with this premise.

For the most part, a vehicle with a 50/50 balance will perform (handle) much better than one where the balance is 35/65 or similar.

I'll take it one step further and say that most of the vehicles weight (95+%) should be BETWEEN THE AXLES.

Since becoming race fan AND a racer back in the mid '70's, I almost always think the battery should be in the backseat behind the front passenger of most vehicles. With mid and rear engine-vehicles being the exception.

I like my batts at the center of my truck and a good foot and a half lower. Anytime I can move 150 lbs that much in the vehicles favor I'll gladly do it...fock GM's engineers. They're the same ones that designed these bodies to fill with salt, mud and other detritus and then retain it so they could rot in 2 or 3 years. They're also the same dumb-asses that figured the 10 bolt rear would be just fine in a 4 wheel drive Suburban. Need I mention the spectacular piece of engineering the Gov-lock was? Pardon me for not giving a rat's ass what GM's brain trust did back in the 50's...

That was one of those rants that could have gone on for a lot longer...:doah:

How about sbc valve covers...what did it take, 34 years to change a poor design and go with centerbolt?
