If I want to make a a crossover pipe removable, is it as easy as butting the two pieces of pipe against each other and using these:

Anybody try it?

I've had good success with the the overlap style on another system, where the inlet of the next section is expanded to fit over the outlet of the previous. Then it has slots cut into the first couple of inches for the band clamp to go over. However, that style requires like 4 extra inches of slip to allow a section in the middle to come out, which is tough when there are a lot of bends.

Ball and socket is like $45 for each joint as are the V-band clamps.

I think ball and socket would be the best way to go, easy on and off and would be clean, plus you know it will always line back up easily. I know that is what is on my '09 Avalanche from the factory after the cat. Jeg's website has some for $29.95

Used two of them to break my exhaust into sections on my supra. They worked, didnt leak or anything but I really didnt test or drive the car very much.

I have used those band clamp things on my Blazer for over a year now with no problems. I then pulled the exhaust and put it on a different Blazer, re-using the clamps, and they still work fine.

Cheap and easy, that's for sure.

I don't see how the alignment depends on the type of joint?

Are you talking about just simple cut pipes or with the expansion and overlap?

We use band clamps like that at Volvo. The original exhausts are one piece but the replacement parts are 2 pieces. The 2 pipe ends butt together with the band clamp on and it's done. They seem to hold up just fine.

Lots of heavy diesel trucks use that style. I personnally do not like it. There are much better ways.

Ball & sockets can give you some mis-alignment so those are nice.

My favorite is this: http://store.airflo.com/casttcostfor1.html

It does not allow for mis-alignment but if I am building an exhaust that should not be a problem anyway. They make them in 2-5" so that is nice, 4 & 5" ball & sockets are not easy to find. It does not use gaskets, & I think it looks cleaner.

I used these on my 79 Dually with the Cummins in it.

I have absolutely no complaints and the parts were very well built. I am able to drop a section of my exhaust out incase I need to pull my transmission or transfer case. Of course these do require welding

When I re-do my crossover exhaust on my K5 I will be sure to go with this setup again, it's top quality.
