removing a t-case...

yay, t-case is out. As some surmised, it was just a matter of the trannys threaded studs hanging up on the adapter. I unbolted the adapter from the t-case and it pretty much slid right off. Whatsmore, my HF trans jack worked perfectly... even on gravel/dirt. :thumb:

Now I just need to get the tranny out. I know I need to disconnect the shift linkage, remove cooler lines, disconnect a couple of electrical connectors, TV cable... hmmm.... anything else before I start yanking on it? lol!

lol! We'll see I guess. Shouldn't be to hard... just akward. If I had access to my concrete slab, this would be easier. Lets just say I can cancel my gym membership with all the yanking/pulling/grunting I have been doing trying to move around on gravel under my rig. lol!

yeah, I thought about that. I think I was kind of worried that I'd be tugging on the t-case from behind and it would suddenly pop off, the trans jack would roll back, and when it got to the end of the plywood it would tip over and dump a 205's rear output onto my nuts. ;) I think I might put something down when I go to pull the tranny though...

Just outta curiosity, what all was involved w/ mating your 700r4 to a 205? My 85 diesel's 208 just ground down the range fork (rebuilt and installed it today) and one of my long term goals was a 205 swap, but thats a completely different animal. If anyone has maybe a link to a site or any other info, that'd be great. Thanks

Tangent on tangent, did you use a "rebuild kit" or replace individual parts in your 208? Were the parts national chain or local or dealer? Thanks.:D

Don't a 700 and a 350 use the same adapter? Should be a direct bolt-up. :dunno:

no, not a direct bolt up. The factory 700-to-208 output shaft is 27 spline, but it sticks out further than a th350-to-np205 shaft does. I used a spacer to make up the difference. They cost about $60 shipped. Very simple, 2" cast aluminum thingy that just fits over the butt end of the tranny. It comes with longer studs etc. All you need to do is pull the t-case, adapter and trim about 1/8" off the end of the factory output shaft (grinder + cutoffwheel will work fine) and you're set. All bolt up from there. If you're interested, my adapter will be FS. I won't need it anymore with a th400+np203+np205.

The only other alternative to the spacer is to tear down the whole tranny and swap in a different (shorter) output shaft. AA has them. problem with this approach is that big CV joints on the 205s front output may not clear the tranny pan. The spacer is cheaper, easier, will allow the biggest of CVs and gives ya a little longer front driveline to boot. Definitely the best alternative.

yes, it used studs... but I'm selling my 205 spacer also, and they need to go with that spacer. They would be too long to work with a normal factory adapter anyway. Also, the local guy still has a couple of days. ;)
