I just got a Dana 60 and am going through it, I want to pull the axles so I can possibly put a locker in it, but do I have to pull the knuckles/kingpins first? I have taken the dust shield off but now can't see what to do next to remove the spindle or axle. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Remove the spindle, then the axle will come out.

You have to remove the lockouts and then the hubs (via the two 6 pronged spindle nuts). Remove the hub, then the 5 bolts that hold on the spindle and remove the spindle. The shafts will come out after that.

If you are installing a full carrier replacement locker (i.e. Detroit, ARB, etc.) you may need to reset the backlash on the gears.

The spindle should be held on with 6 nuts. Remove them and the caliper mount and spindle should come right off. Once that is done the axles will slide out the hole in the knuckle. If there is gear oil in the dif it will leak into the tubes when you pull the shaft (obviously:o).

I thought if the dust shield is off then the spindle and caliper mount should come right off also. Did you smack the spindle with a mallet? Sometimes they like to stick.

If the spindle nuts are off and the spindle won't come off, you can thread a spindle nut back on the spindle and use a 2 or 3 jaw puller to pull the spindle out of (off) the knuckle. Put the screw of the puller on the end of the axle and the jaws on the outside of the nut.

This works much better than hammering on a spindle that is rusted together.

Ahhh so. See theres always an alternative to BFH

OK, sweet. I am right there, the dust shield and caliper mount are off, so I just need to slide/beat/pull the spindle off. I was unsure if it was pressed to the knuckle or not.

Now what about a locker or posi? What is recommended, good value, gives good driveability, and easy to do it yourself?

Lock-rite's have a good reputation in D60's.

Cheap and easy to install.

Lock rights are good because they can be changed from case to case. If you have 4.10 or higher gears then you need 1 detroit or ARB if 4.56 or lower a different one. So having said that if there is a gear change in your future and you really want a locker now then go with a lock right.

I am welded. If I were to do it again I would probably spend the money on a selectable for the front.
