Is there some kind of process to remove chrome? I've got a bumper that I want to powdercoat. Should I just sand it a whole bunch?

i used 60 grit sand paper and the herculiner struck. i had a chrome bush/ light bar thing and it was just bad looking so i sanded it and herculinded it. didnt have any problems.

Though it would be more work, I'm sure rubbing it off myself would be cheaper.

In general, it's safer to rub one off yourself than to engage a professional...

oh, wrong topic :haha:

On topic, you gotta sand the heck out of it. When I went to paint my chrome bumper, I just wirebrushed it, and the paint/cheapy bedliner came off pretty quickly. Flaked off, in fact. I'd say beat it with a 60grit disc on a random orbital, or maybe even a flap disc on a drill or grinder.

If you want to powder coat chrome. Dont use sand paper or a grinding wheel. It will totally screw up the finish.
Totally clean the part get as much oil rust, corrosion dirt off as possible.
Rough it up good and finish cleaning it up with a corse wire wheel. Need to to get all the shiny parts dull.
if you want a smooth good finish rough it up with a coarse wire wheel then follow up with a fine wire wheel.
Then wipe it down and clean it good with a strong solvent like tolulene
Wash it off good with warm water/soft rag
Then
wash it again
then rinse it good with a hose.
Wipe down with clean soft rag.
Make sure it is clean and there are no oils/contanimants/rust left on it.
Best to handle the clean parts with clean gloves on. The oil from your hands wil cause the coating to flake.
Yur ready to powder coat.

i just had a set of rims powder coated, and the place that did the coating...they did all the prep work,..they sandblasted them and then wiped them down w/some sort of solvent, then coated them...the front side, back side, & inside of the wheels!

the prep work was included in the price they quoted me... 15''x10'' w/2.5'' BS, they charged me $35 + tax, per wheel to prep & coat them!

when i went and picked up the wheels, i asked them about doing/coating my stock(chrome) front bumper & the frame horns(bumper up-rights, whatever, they are called) & the big 'ole silverado mirrors & door handles to match the wheels, they quoted me $75-$130, and again thats w/ them sand blasting the parts and doing the prep work themselves and to powder coat the parts to match my wheels, they are a deep dark Grey, they called the color ''anthracite''

I'm planning to have the '80 model rectangular headlight buckets and the small pieces of chrome that run from side to side between the buckets, also coated in that anthracite color also, from what I've seen them do & hearing their prices, they will probally be less than $50-$75 for the headlight buckets and the chrome around and thru the grill,..

this deep dark gray(anthracite) looks really good in place of the chrome, my plans are to have all the shiny stuff(chrome) coated in this dark Grey(anthracite), w/ rest of the truck in john deere's ''blitz black''(the flattest black I've found locally), the k5 being an older body style, 1980, it has the side trim that wraps around the front and back fenders and ties into wheel well trim, then the side trim will get painted as close in color, as my local paint store can match to the anthracite powder coating, b/c its a real PITA (from what I've been told) to remove this trim, and for some reason its alot more money to get aluminum powder coated, so it will get painted w/ a very close match, base coat/clear coat paint, then an OD green stripe painted on the side trim and wheel well trim where the original color is!

then, inside of the side trim on the body panels on each side, I'm planning to put real tree hardwoods hi-definition vinyl inside of the trim! i can't wait until its done and i can post up some pics! i recently saw some window tint that was camo also, but, I'll decide on it later.

sorry for the hijack, but I'm very excited to see the k5 once its done, and would like to here peoples thoughts, but i mainly wanted to let you know that the place that does my powder coating, does the prep work on the pieces, before coating the parts, the only thing they ask of the customer is to degrease the part(s), they aren't worried about dirt, rust, etc,etc,...but need the grease/oil removed,..they will do this step also for an extra $20-30...

We use Aluminum oxide blasting media, it roughs up any surface good enough to coat it. If you don't have access to it, find a local place to blast it for you.
