I have four steel wheels with the chrome rusted and flaking off. I would to wheel the chrome off and paint them black. Any suggestions ? I've heard using a 60 grit sand paper wheel roughshod the chrome up so the primer and paint will stick.

call your local sandblaster... the big machines they run will rip it off...

you can scuff and prime with an etching primer like zinc chromate and it will hold up "ok".. but you'll never featheredge where it was peeling, so you will see the peel areas...

As Ryoken says, you'll not hide the edges, plus if it's peeling now, chances are the rot is under the 'good' chrome and that'll flake sooner or later. Heavy duty sand blasting if they're rough anyway or you can get them stripped at a chroming company but that'll be much dearer. But get the blasters to call you immediately they're done so you can get some paint on before they start oxidising too much.

I was thinking about this myself, chrome is in perfect shape but was wondering about sand blasting.

Wondering how much the cost is, I can buy black rims for 80 bucks a pop.

Check with a powdercoater, they have to sandblast anyway. They might be able to do it for less than $80 a piece.

And I mean have them powdercoat them black too.

Yeah def was thinking about that as well. Or I could just scuff them up and spray bomb em. That would be the cheapest way.
