removing hood springs to prevent hood bend

I'm thinking about removing the hood spring on a 78 to prevent more damage to the bent hood. I have the hinges oiled well. Any body else run there hoods with out springs?

get the reinforcement plates, they really help if your springs and hinges aren't binding.

I've often thought of installing a pair of lift shocks like the hoods on newer vehicles. Just need to fabricate a couple simple brackets and find the correct lift shock and it should work out.
