Repairing the tailgate posts, replacing the tailpan and floor patching

Lesson learned: buy K5 floor panels for a K5, even if you're going to cut most of them off. The truck ones are ribbed all the way to the back edge. The K5 ones are flat for the last inch or two. You can actually spot the difference in the LMC catalog pages I posted above. I can't explain why a truck gate with truck floor on truck posts is a problem, but the tailgate hits those ribs. I mean, there's only one way to put all these pieces together. So now I'm cutting every one at the back and smashing it flat. On the bright side, there is tons of weld now holding the floor to the tailpan. On the down side, it's a ton of work. I noticed this difference a while back, but assumed it was to accommodate the fat K5 tailgate. To fix it with the hinge mounts would require slotting those mounts out even further and getting pretty bad sheet metal alignment.

Redid my side panels to go with the extra space afforded by the skinny tailgate and added weather stripping.

I used rattle can weld-through primer on all the seams I would weld. Then some Omni 2k primer I had laying around. The blue is from the same can of Kirker Acrylic Urethane I painted the whole truck with several years ago.

awesome motivation for me to do this, also a sweet write up for me to follow when i hopefully do this, this year at some point. Thanks and nice work dude!

Thanks for this article. I bought the LMC tail pan and have been itching to do it. Started plasma cutting it out on the RH side and when I removed the bolts I realized that most of the post material was gone! :yikes:

Began to panic a little but was wondering if I bought the LMC posts if they would have the mounting holes on the lower portion where the tailpan bolts to. Looks like a pain in the butt but I'm not scared and besides I haven't got to the paint part yet. So now is the time! Thanks again dude! You have given me confidence. :hack:

P.S. does anyone know where you can buy lower front rear quarter patches? (Ahead of the rear wheel portion?)

Thanks- Nick:waytogo:

Went back and uploaded images from LMC catalog. The previous links were broken when LMC redid their website recently.
