Ok guys, I joined cause im having a problem finding a new motor in the 400hp range ,either keeping the tbi or changing it to carb. I need any info on how to. Who to contact. What will work.Ihave 5800.00 in the budjet. Just talked with gm performance and he didnt have a clue becauuuse of the tbi. Some dealer must know? Can Iget a chip now for the 1991 chevy 4x4 std. cab ,4 speed ,(granny gear) while I'm waiting? Please help me !

If it was me, I'd be swapping in a 6.0L out of a late model truck instead. I'm in the process of swapping a 5.3L into mine and reworking the factory harness presently. Lots of info on ls1tech.com, ls1truck.com and a few posts on here about it. Great fuel economy and loads of power.

I agree with swapping the new motor. A normal TBI even a modded one will have some issues supporting that kind of horsepower.

A newer 6.0 can be tuned up for quite a bit of power. And you can always add a supercharger later if you want

Not sure why so many people hate on carbs, but if it were me I'd drop in that sweet ZZ427

What he said is true. With that size budget, I wouldn't waste any time or money with a TBI set up. It's far easier to get 400HP out of an LS and still have decent fuel economy.

Ijust looked at edelbrock engines gonna buy a new one from them allready made. They sell a TBI engine with 425 horse and 460lbs torque

What year engine to engine and is it tbi? The wiring is different ? How much of a task is that?

...and I have some ocean front property in Phoenix to sell you.:D

It will take more than just droping in a crate motor to make 425 out of a TBI motor. You will most likely need to get into custom programing, modified TBI & injectors, replacement fuel pump & regulator, increased air intake, full exhaust...

Coming from Edelbrock, prob comes with their TBI setup and controller. Basically a complete, ready to install, type thing.

I wouldn't run modified TBI at all IMO, the last two we've put together have been very finicky on tunes, and we've been back and forth with at least 5 chips and datalogging, huge pain in the ass. Personally read up on what I wrote earlier swap in a gen 3 motor with that kind of budget, get DOUBLE the mileage probably and smile that it'll run perfect all the time and the computer is much much easier to tune and go control your fans, etc.
