Replace transmission - stupid question

I need to replace the transmission in my 76 K5, which is a full-time 4x4. I found a replacement th350, but before I buy it, I need a couple questions answered.

I was told it came off a 4x4. If it didn't, will this matter? If it did, will it matter if the truck wasn't full-time 4x4?

How do I flush the transmission?

Should I open it up before install?

Check the spline count of the output shaft that goes into the Tcase and how far it sticks out of the transmission.. You will need (I believe) the adapter for the 350 also since the 400 and 350 adapters are different.

If the 350 didn't come from a 4X4 you can swap out the output shaft and make it work as long as the case will bolt up.
 
Yes the old output shaft would work. You might need to take an adapter portion off the back of the tranny and swap it also.

I would pull the torque converter, whichever one you are going to use, drain it, and right before re-install put a quart of tranny fluid in it. I would also drop the tranny pan, drain the fluid and replace the filter. Since the tranny is out if there is a gasket or rubber bushing on the Tcase end replace it and the seal on the front of the tranny. Grease the input shaft before installing to the engine. The full time 4x4 vs. part time 4x4 doesn't matter. That is controlled in the transfer case.

I am sure the pro mechanics on here can chime in with more specific info.
 
Is there any specific type of grease I should use for the input shaft? Or is it something that anyone at Autozone would know?

If the replacement trans came out of a 4x4 you should be good to go unless it was an early 80's model which had a longer output shaft. Shafts can only be swapped by complete trans disassembly. If you are buying a used trans, pull the pan and check for burnt fluid or excessive debris at minimum.
 
went over today and towed his blazer home for him, it was about 6 blocks away.
 
There is no need to grease the input as it will be going into the torque converter. If you remove the torque converter be sure that when you out it back on its all the way on. You will here at least two distinct clunks.

Depending on the condition of the fluid is how far I'd go into flushing. I'd most certainly change the filter and put a new gasket on the pan.


As far as the out put shaft, its the first thing to go in and the last to come out during a complete rebuild. So unless you plans an tearing the whole Trans apart I would make sure it's 4x4 Trans.
 
They make a can of stuff for flushing your cooler on ur truck. I'd also pull the converter and dump it before u buy it if it comes with the converter. Will give u a chance to see what fluid looks like.
 
got a question for you guys the used tranny he picked up has a 9 and a half inch tail shaft looks like its out of a 2 wheel drive truck, will that fit?
