I have a '78 K5 with stock carb. At altitude, this beast loses all power and limps (5 mph) and loses all power. Does anybody have a suggestion for a replacement carb? Has anybody tried the Edelbrock off road caarb?
When I say losing power, I mean it is absolutely gutless. Returning to So Cal from Denver pulling a utility trailer, I maxed at 5mph approaching Eisenghower Tunnel. EFI is a year or two down the road due to cost.No carb will ever run good at sea level AND at altitude. Rejetting at the least and float levels may need to be adjusted at different altitudes.
Swap to TBI via a junkyard conversion or some place like Affordable Fuel Injection and live happily ever after. Although there will still be a power loss at altitude, it should be significantly less than with a carb. No engine will run the same at low and high altitudes, there is simply less air up there. The overall health of the engine will play a part in all of this too.
