Replacing a Quarter Panel

Same old song and dance...owner refuses to pull the top off, says it has NEVER been removed....
Won't take any more pictures, and with just those I see rust...
Would have to fly to Oklahoma just to look at it....

This is BS....

Why is it so hard to get photos? Makes you think they don't want you to see....

As for the yellow one, the owner turned out to be nutcase maniac hothead...

It's been my experience that if someone doesn't want to take specific pics for you to see problem areas then they are hiding something or just plain too lazy and don't care who they sell it to.

Sucks about the yellow one but, if he's getting up in arms about this title thing then whatever the problem is, he doesn't want to deal with it either. Just wants to sell it and wash his hands of it.

In the future, don't rely on the seller to send you pics of "all of the rust", they may only send you pics of what you can see from the outside. Ask for specific pics like the body mounts, the underside of the floors, the rocker areas, inside front of the rear wheel tubs, the tailgate hinge area, and maybe more. Do some research here on this site and learn about the problem areas, ask questions here (as you have been doing) and we are more than happy to help you along the way. It's almost as though we're buying it with you, kinda living vicariously through your situation.

And remember, keep a cool head. If you are in a position to buy a classic car/truck then in most cases you have the upper hand. Most anyone, in a private sale situation, selling a classic car isn't selling it cause they want to but rather they need to for whatever reason. If something is not right or they won't work with you, be polite, leave your number and walk away. Maybe even call them back in a week or two and see if they want to deal.

And again, don't hesitate to ask questions here.

I would add that don't be surprised if someone refuses to remove a top for you...

1 - it's a pain in the butt if your not set up for it..

and 2 - some people think it's some sort of taboo and are seriously proud that they've never had it off... "it doesn't leak that way".. personally i think it's bunk, i pull mine off and on all the time...

I love this forum already....the support is unbelievable and a wealth of knowledge and experience here...this is the best forum period for K5...even when I do Google searches, 90% of the time I am referred back to a post in this forum.

I need to learn how to better search the forum, but a lot of good information is buried inside various topics...just like this thread..the title is about quarter panels, but is has evolved into discussion about Title transfer and other really good information.

By the way, I have just found another one in Houk, Arizona...wherever that is...I need to Google map it. I emailed the guy, going to try to call him in an hour or so...
I wonder if Houk is close to Phoenix?....let me see...OMG!

It is in the middle of the desert...near "I'm standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona...and half-way to Albuquerque on I-40

Talk about remote...

If you look at the bottom of this thread you'll see something called "tags". I added a bunch of relevant tags to this thread. You can search the site by searching tags...that way even if the title of the thread is misleading, the search will find the info you want anyways.

Anyone can add tags to a thread, look to the right where it says edit tags and click on it. Add the tag you want and click save.

It's grossly overpriced, by about $2500 at least. It may be a solid survivor, but it also needs a full resto and more than minor repair in areas. If you're into a full tear down and doing a frame-off restoration this is a good candidate. If you're looking for a clean driver needing little than this is not the truck IMO.

The first rule for finding your dream truck and the focus is narrow like yours is...be patient. Be very patient and know that you could stumble on the perfect K5 tomorrow, or not until next year. Artzner waited over a year and watched his K5 go through eBay several times without selling before being able to make the deal he was happy with on a beautiful Blazer. The reserve on the first auction was $10K, and a year later Craig got it for $5K. That is patience...

There's an orange full convertible 73-75 GMC Jimmy at one of the lots here in Billings. If you want me to, I can go take a look at it for you. I don't know what they're asking for it, but it looks like it's in great shape. It's orange with a white top and it's riding on 31" tires.

And just so you know, we don't have a rust issue here like in the midwest. They use sand on the roads, not salt.

Here's one I found in Phoenix but I think it has a little more body work needed than I want to deal with...what do you think? Looks like rust all along the bottom front fender, rocker panels, rear quarter....or is that mud? Maybe I am wrong....

Tough to tell from those pics. It might just be rock chips in the paint and it might be rust. If it came from Az., chances are it's not rust though.

Just cause it's in Arizona now doesn't mean that's where it grew up.....:eek1:

That's the trouble with long distance purchases....it cost's almost a grand to get a plane ticket and just look...video would show a lot more detail....hmmmm but for the price he is asking I have seen a lot better...I just didn't have any luck in buying those...

Appears to be rust holes in the tailgate which is an easy fix by replacing the gate. But if that's any indication of the rest of the truck...

I'm thinking there are better candidates out there.

How far are you willing to travel for a K5. They are all over here in Wyoming and Montana. And like snuffy74 said we don't have rust problems. You wont find any salt on our roads just lots of sand.

Apparently I am willing to deal across the country...I am in the process of buying DocJakes and his is in San Diego....I have no reason to believe that this deal will fall through, but if it were I may be interested in looking out there.

Well the 75 GMC Jimmy that was on the lot looks like it's been sold. I took a look at it Tuesday and it was in pretty decent shape too. The bad part was that they wanted $6500 for it. IMO, it wasn't $6500 worth of pretty, but I'm cheap. Sorry I couldn't help you on that one.

Thanks, I appreciate it...I only have $5500 anyway...I can't go above that if I had to...The national average appears to be $4500...it would have to be extraordinary to warrant $6500, and the buyer may not have paid full price...or he bought pay-and-go weekly
