Pulled the carrier out of my D44 I bought and the bearings are pretty much toast. How do you replace them and how hard is it?

Bearing puller and a shop press is the preferred method . Not hard to do at all if the right equipment is used. Becareful of the shims behind the bearings.

Yep, don't screw up the carrier shims (they will be under the bearings on a dana 44). When you press the new ones back on, make sure everything is really clean.

The shims will slide easily off of the carrier. Make sure you put them back the way they were.

Yep ! Don't mix them up from side to side . It will change your set up if that happens .

Just a note - if the carrier bearings are toast you might want to look at the pinion bearings as well .

You can take that "hammer" out of shop press

It can be done that way but be damn careful not to strike the cage or rollers of the tappered bearing what so ever. the only part of the bearing that should be touched is the inner race and than extreme care should be used . I REALLY suggest getting the diff to a shop press if not familiar with this procedure .

Well, I'll call one of the shops near me in the morning and see how much they charge. It shouldn't be that much since i've already got it out, should it? (I'll check that pinion bearing tomorrow. Hopefully it's okay, but with my luck on this axle it's probably not)

Good idea ! I would not think that a shop would charge too much just for pressing two bearings on and off - depends oon how busy they are I guess .

Those pinion bearings are in TWO quantity and they can only be checked by removing the pinion itself.
