restoring door panels

The SEM vinyl/plastic paint works great if the panels is cleaned and lightly scuffed first. Although I have not tried it on crusty panels... yet. If you want the panels to be black, lightly sand them and give them a coat of Duplicolor spray-on bedliner. It has a texture similar to the factory plastic. It works on dash pads too after filling the cracks.

I'm thinking of painting my old faded red panels black.. is the duplicolor stuff the way to go? Does it hold up well?

SEM colorcoat

Or is this stuff better? Where do I find it?

Otherwise I'm considering buying a black aftermarked set from LMC. Same with the dash pad (mine is full of cracks)

I am paining a center console as we speak. I am using SEM stuff. The console was blue. I cleaned the heck out of it first. Put a couple coats on it. It still scratches easy. Re did it and put a few clear coats on it. We will se how it works out. The SEM stuff is $15.00 a can. Pretty pricey.

The SEM is certainly a better product. The only reason I suggested the Duplicolor bedliner stuff was because the panels in question were crusty/crumbly.

Scratches easy is not an option.. I have german shepherd dogs. lol.

$15.00 a can is cheaper than $200.00 for new panels. If I redo my old panels I might get new padded armrests, cloth pads that go by the door handle, and the aluminum moulding pieces. Basically all the accessories that LMC sells for stock door panels (they are supposed to fit).

I sanded mine all down with 120 first to get all the big scratches out then followed up with 320. Went to paint the damn things and it's still fisheyeing. I'm using the Krylon Fusion and when it still did it it pissed me off. I guess it has something on the panels. I need to clean them with something as well but can't find any wax and grease remover around here.

Any other ideas of what to use?

ya sanded the armor all into the plastic... :wink1: thats why your ALWAYS supposed to degrease ANYTHING before sanding it... cars, boats, etc.... denatured alcohol is all you need to know.. i just did a step by step in an identical thread...

as to scratches...... it's awesome on dashpads cuz they aren't subject to the wear of door panels.... sticks better too.... it holds up on the doors, but will show wear as time goes by... easy enough to freshen up tho....

Try damp towel/dry toweling em a couple times with denatured.. then when ya go to coat em, put the first couple coats on lightly and kinda dry.. letting them dry thoroughly between coats.. once it's coating without fisheye, you can put a couple regular coats on...
