ok im a moron i took the sending unit out of my 86 k5's tank to check to see if there was crap in there. a week later now i cant figure out how to put it back in. the sender is in but i cant get the ring to spin and tighten down. could someone please post some pics of what it looks like when the ring in the locked position, or walk me thru it step by step. when i took it off the little tabs were pointed up but the only way i can see to tighten it is if the tabs go under those 3 little lips that stick out if that makes sense and that would bend the tabs so im really lost now.

I will be putting my tank back into my truck tonight (if the weather stays nice) so I can take pictures when it is back together. If I have the same trouble, perhaps we can work it out together.

If I remember correctly, it should just spin right back and tighten down. You can buy a special tool for spinning it on and off if I recall as well. The only other time I did this I didn't find the need for it though.

ya i thought that also, but when you line up the holes in the ring so it slides into place and then spins, you spin it freely until it hits those little tabs that stick up and the ring is really loose all the way around. and i didnt replace anything so i didnt get the wrong parts.

Buff,

It sounds like you may be missing the rubber gasket / O-ring that goes between the gas tank and the sending unit. Or, if you've got it, it may be shot. These get hard and brittle over time, as opposed to soft and supple when new.

The tabs definitely go "up" and you can use a screwdriver, etc. and a small hammer and tap the screwdriver to rotate the ring into the correct position.

Good Luck.

Yep, if it isn't tight then the big o-ring seal is missing or damaged. Make sure it didn't drop into the tank, and buy a new one if you can't find it. It needs to be there to properly seal the sending unit.

I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to get my tank put back up. The part I needed was the wrong one so I didn't get any pictures obviously.

Wasatch K5 has it all down pat as I remember. I did go out and test fit mine and it was snug as long as the big rubber o-ring was there.

ahh ok ya i have no o-ring i belive i took it off but i think i completly set it off to the side and forgot all about it, i will look for it and see were i put it. thanks guys
