Reverse rotation water pump? water pump off, question??

If it were me i would just install a NEW standard rotation water pump and know FOR SURE that it is new and correct. Water pumps are relatively cheap and it's cheap insurance that you have the correct pump on there.

Yeah but a cold UPPER hose? Even with a closed T-stat or wrong way water pump, if the engine is even up to operating temperature the upper hose should be hot.

If the wrong pump is used the water can't flow correctly and even with the t-stat open the upper hose probably won't get hot if the water can't flow properly. Yes he may have SOME movement now even with the wrong pump but not anywhere near enough to keep it cool.

i'm with 4x4. I doubt its the wrong pump.. but maybe a worn out one. Did you just buy this vehicle? Or have you had it for a while and the problem just come up?

I just bought the vehicle. I'm headed out of town to visit grandparents, so this will have to wait till after xmas. I was hoping to get it figured out but just didn't have enough time, thanks for all the help so far. I'm sure we'll get it figured out.

oh, well i guess if you just bought it the PO may have had the problem for a while and just never figured it out.. or even knew there was a problem!

replacing water pump

Ok, so I've got the old water pump off, wondering what should be happening with the water pump off completely. If i pour water through the top of the manifold where the tstat goes, should it drain out of the holes where the water pump bolts on? If not then what? I'm thinking that it should, but its not... so that makes me think that there is some kind of blockage within the flow through the block somewhere???? How do I fix that if thats the case? Thanks for the help...

Yeah, I know, I just don't want to install the new one till I"m sure that everything else is working properly, its not that much work to take it off and put it on, but I'd rather only do it once.... Also, what kind of sealant or whatever am I supposed to use on the gaskets when I put it back on?

just a little bit of RTV... I use blue on everything. You can even just use RTV instead of the gaskets... but a little with the gaskets works too. Make sure you put some RTV on the threads of the bolts before you stick them in as well.

If you try to pour water through the top water outlet it won't go anywhere because you have a thermostat in there that is closed when it's cold.

I always like to use a spray permatex sealer on all paper gaskets. It's much cleaner and friendlier than RTV.

Well, I went ahead and replaced the water pump, decided that because I had run it with no tstat and it had circulated that there shouldn't be any blockage or anything, so I put the new one on using some RTV goop. Drove it around the parking lot for about 20 minutes and the upper hose did finally get warm when the tstat opened so I guess there may have been something wrong with the water pump. The engine temp seemed to stay down as well. I think I have fixed the problem. It did get a little hot coming up the parking deck, 4 stories, but I didn't have the fan shroud on, so maybe that'll help. I think its all good, I guess we'll see when I actually drive it around some. It'll be insured on Monday I guess, I've been having a hard time figuring out what I wanted to do about insurance so, I think I've got that figured out so I'll get it done. Thanks for all the help, I'll bring this one back to life if it keeps overheating....

Now pull the cover off the back of the old pump and inspect the impeller for any obvious signs of failure.

Pics

So, this is what was inside, looks like some rust, corrosion, etc. It also appears that the plate behind the impeller is a little warped. Not sure if this could have been the problem or not??? I think that is standard rotation though, so I guess the PO put the right one in, it just sat too long and warped?? Guesses?

I just realized what you thought I was saying... I actually meant, if I take the thermostat out and pour fluid directly in where the thermostat is... I already have the water pump back in but still curious as to what should happen?

With the water pump off and the thermostat out if you were to pour water down the thermostat hole it would come out the water pump openings in the block.

That's what I was thinking you were saying, and that makes no sense! Did it just overflow at the t-stat hole as you were filling it??

IMO if that's a standard rotation water pump, there is nothing there to cause it to overheat. Only time I've ever heard overheating caused by the pump is when the impeller vanes rot off.

yeah, not sure what was going on with that. when I poured fluid into the top I was expecting for it to all flow smoothly out of the water pump holes and basically do a "minor" flush of the block or whatever. However, the block filled up and didn't drain down like I expected, it just sort of held the water. I was worried about this at first until I remembered that when I ran without a TSTAT, it obviously circulated the fluid since both hoses got hot, so I'm still sort of confused abou this. I've really got to just drive this thing around but still no insurance because of weekend/holiday:( so hopefully soon and I will be able to really test whether it stays cool with a new radiator/water pump/tstat...
