reversed steering box?

So apparently I got ahold of a reversed steering box. The long story short I had a 2wd box with crossover, in which I broke several of the bolts, broke off one tab on the box completely, and bent another. So I run down to the local junkyard where I've got all my parts and the guy has a box sitting on the shelf. It looks identical and bolts right up...except after installing it the steering is backwards (i.e. turn wheel right and the wheels go left). Needless to say I was a little upset.

I didn't even know they had a reverse box out there. So what is it out of?

I'm guessing I can replace the input shaft (haven't torn the "new" box apart but I'm guessing that is the difference). Except what is the trick to keeping all of the ball bearings between the corkscrew input and the sector shaft? Anybody have a link to a complete steering box rebuild?

Or should I just put a new 2wd sector shaft into the existing 4wd box (and redrill the hydro-assit ports)?

HUH? please post a picture of this box. also if you tap the top and end cap you can stop destroying steering boxes by drilling holes in them.

There's really nothing you could see in a picture. As I stated before it looks identical to the previous 2wd box, and the original 4wd box (minus the sector shaft).

Heck, I might consider tapping the caps if I use a different box and have to tear it apart anyway. I chose tapping the actual box because it was easier, and after the fact the retaining ring on the end cap on the "old" box was a huge PITA to remove.

Do you have the pitman arm on the wrong side? It would be physically impossible for the steering box to change the direction in which you are turning the shaft BUT if the pitman arm is on 180 degrees backwards it would then be oposite.

I really wish it was that easy.

It is quite easy for the steering box to change the "direction", as I mentioned before it's basically the same as a right hand vs. left hand thread bolt.

I hate doing something blatantly stupid, but in this circumstance I wish that was the case.

When the tires are pointing straight, the pitman arm is pointing straight towards the back of the truck, and the draglink is running parrallel to the tierod and axle.

There is a Sagina box that is reverse of what you need. I can not remeber what they are off of but i have one at the shop right now as a matter of fact.

IIRC, the Spool valve and worm gear just turn the other way, the cases themselves are identical. If the internals are good from your old box you can swap them and i would recomend replacing all seals while you are in there.

If you want just give Matt at West Texas Offroad a call and he can give you more info. 325-651-5010

This is an Astro van steering box most likely. I made the mistake of putting a S-10 Blazer steering box into my Astro, and guess what it turned backwards. Take it back and tell him it is not a pickup box.

leave it custom. if it gets stolen (heaven forbid) the thief will turn left and go right into the ditch:haha:

I believe this is a fullsize van steering box...identical on the outside just a different worm gear. It doesn't look the spool valve is any different as the teeth are straight cut, not spiral cut.

I know what box I need...just a 2wd box from a pickup like every ever cross-over steering conversion ever made.

The holes in the spool valve are drilled reverse.

After researching the 'net some more I believe you may be correct. I didn't think it looked that way, but it's really hard to see inside it.

Yeah the holes go diagonal (sorry if my spelling is wrong) either left or right. I found this out the hard way haha:doah: :doah:
