are there any drawbacks mounting the front springs in reverse fashion, looks like it would move the axle forward an inch or so.

Bushings and bolts are different sizes for starters.
not on all lift springs .
and eye to center pin same distance . wont get you anything.

measured mine and there is a one inch difference and as far as the spring eye bushing goes they use the same size bolt (did not come that way. a mod I made when installing them many moons ago),looks like it can be done then. the reason is to keep the tires away from the rear of the fender that has been trimmed but I still need about half an inch more to keep the tire from hitting it
good set then to have that option . 
You could also re drill your perches.
Will not work unless you have crossover steering.
