Should I worry about ring and pinion manufacturer for my 60 14 gear swap? I was going to buy "usa" but wasn't sure if it really matters.

Just did 2 USA Standard gear setups.

Worked good, seemed quality.

All non factory gears have a disclaimer saying no warranty for noise... sucks, but thats the quality of this crap nowadays. Its realy hit or miss from what I see.

lots of Yukon for dana axles are reboxed spicer orignals .

and as said setup is prob most important . . . unless your running tons of hp in the motor .

Oh you never know about HP it is pretty mild but the current gears have held a turboed 454 pulling a tractor pull sled. Noise isn't a big deal as long as I can still hear the radio.

I got a bud that does gear setups quite a bit, he recommended Richmond gears for my truck (14BFF) and I got a set still made in USA, that was 5 years ago though....

the Vette got a set from Richmond gears as well.

Ive used Richmonds and Yukons. Pretty sure my truck has a set of richmonds in it, theyve got a tad bit of noise to them and the setup was beautiful. I put Yukons in my 44 front, but havent driven it those setup easy. The 8.8 in my trooper has Motives in it I believe, no setup issue.

I had a hell of a time setting up USA standard gears in a 8.5 10 bolt one time at work. The pinion depth was all over the place. Took like 4 or 5 hours to set that rear up. Then when I talked to my parts guy he said hes has bad feedback on those gears and apparently they are richmond rejects and known to be noisy.

Im not sure how true that is but honestly I dont think you can go wrong with Richmonds or Yukons.

Richmond does sell an economy set...perhaps their top line rejects?
A shame a co. has to lower their standards just to stay in business...for the bargain home mechanic the price probably makes the decision, for every other reason, first quality parts make the decision.

set of richmonds I did in a corvette rear for a guy SUCKED ! backlash wouldn't come in to spec and Richmond wanted a lot more than I have ever read for other axles specs on backlash .

spicer / Yukon I did in my STUBBY build poped in just fine little work and fit great.

No idea on the noisy issue yet. But the setups went quite well in the 14bff and d60 I just helped on. Nice patterns and good backlash readings.

I'd buy them.

Well I dont think they would sell them if they were no good. Gears can make noise and be perfectly fine... So even if they have some noise I wouldnt worry. I doubt you'll ever hear it with tires and life etc anyway.

I didn't set these up personally, I had the 10/12bolt diff polished and blueprinted by a pro corvette diff guy...Richmond 3.90's with 12 bolt spiders and cross shaft, and 31 spline Tom's Kickass axles.

I don't want to sound like a tight ass. I will look at yukons

Last ones I did were factory. Perfect and only took a hour to set up. Only .005 difference in backlash from stock. Dana 44 axle. Does Randy's r&p not do good gears anymore? No one mentioned them in this discussion. When I got my Detroit they had the best prices at the time.

that gets alot of people Vinnie, they are set with just a few thousandths clearance to engage the clutches all the time, but just enough clearance and lubrication (Lucas and GM posi additive) to allow turning without chattering.

built by Gary Ramedai in Conn.
