so if you had a carrier and it was the thicker carrier for deep ratio . . .

and you needed it to fit the thinner for higher ratio . . . .

would it be safe to chuck it up in a mill and turn it down to the correct spec ?

and no it wouldn't be cheeper to just get the correct in this application .
 
I've seen some carrier castings that were simply thicker and some that were specifically cast offset.

Your question is vague in application, if you turned down the carrier would it still have a flange as thick as the lower ratio carrier?
 
Maybe a combination of trimming the ring flange a little and also turn one bearing journal deeper and make a spacer/shim for the other.
 
the 2 side by side the series 4 4.56-up has more meat on it were the ring gear bolts up .

so I don't see why I couldn't .

oh well . was just a idea if I could of made the deal work .
