RIP 79 GMC

Well thanks for ruining my Sunday. I'm sure that truck had a lot of good usable parts. Why did they have to crush that one first.. :(

^ my first thoughts as well--so I didn't watch the video..
I'm depressed enough already, don't need to see another square body get smooshed...such a waste...:frown1:

Admins really need to add some kind of dislike button on here for stuff like this.

Right now I'm wishing it was the new 2019 blazer under there right now instead of that truck...would make it enjoyable to watch.

The problem seems to be finding the people who want the parts, AND are will to pay more than a dollar, before crushing it.
I kept the chrome off of the front of my '79 Chevy, and so far no one seems to care much about factory stuff in decent shape. So I scrapped the other set of headlight bezels which weren't as good, even though they weren't plastic.

I hate scrappers that just see the dollar value in the steel and don't even care what the vehicle is or how cool and valuable.

"It's all junk to me",said one salvage yard owner I deal with ,he scraps anything, doesn't care what it is--rather squash a car or truck for scrap value, than cut it up and sell parts, that may come back to haunt him if they turn out to be no good..

Over the years ,I have seen several highly desirable cars & trucks get crushed there, including a 1977 Trans-Am, "bandit" edition, that was a recovered theft--was missing T-tops,rims & tires, had some dents, but no rot--my friend who was with me wanted it bad,the guy said "$400,no title though, but you must buy it NOW...
My friend said "give me 20 minutes to get to my bank and I'll be back with the money"...
When we got back a half hour later, the car was crushed flat!..guy was grinning, sitting in his loader--and said "I waited 25 minutes and you weren't here so---too late!"..

He had a '66 Chevelle 4 door there one day,out in the "scrap" area, not out front where he sometimes puts vehicles people might want to buy for good money..

I opened the hood,it had a mint nose,no rot on the inner fenders, and a 283 that had been upgraded to a 4 bbl Edelbrock carb & intake, chromed valve covers, very nice interior, and the keys were in it--I asked a employee nearby "Is this your car,or one for sale "?--he replies "neither, its about to be scrapped"..
"Start it up",he says--"It runs good!"..
I did,and instantly wanted the car!..

I ran to the office and asked the owner how much he'd want for it,and he said "I cant get the title, the owner lost it and I'm not going to get involved trying to get a duplicate--if you want it I'll write a bill of sale stating "parts only",but you'll never be able to register it..

:(..dam shame,it was a nice rust free car,so what if it was a 4 door..
He refused to pull the engine and sell it separately also, unless he "ripped" it out with the loader..
15 minutes later,it was in the crusher, after he flattened the roof with the loader....

One of the last times I went there to look for tires,I saw him using an old Mack truck with a flatbed, that had a gin hoist crane setup on it to load shipping containers--he was buying up FWD cars and cutting the entire front clip off them or dropping the sub frame complete with the engine & trans,P/S rack and struts, then piling them up into the shipping containers to be shipped to Lebanon, for $1800 each!..

While I was watching him pick up cars,I spotted a split window VW Beetle way up on top of a pile,it had to be 30 feet up..the floor pan was MINT,and it looked overall in very good condition, still had the engine in it and it looked like it may have been driven there recently!..
--I ran over and told him "Hey--that split window Bug is worth a lot of money!--he replies "no title--not worth s**t to me!--.
I said "even just the rear clip off that thing for the window is worth a fortune--"
"Yeah so what--I aint gonna cut it off and try selling it--waste of time"..
"would you sell the car whole to me "?..
"Nahh, maybe yesterday I would have, before I put it up there--I'll wreck it trying to get it down intact..(roof had some damage from the claws on the crane bucket already"...
I said "Geez, what a sin, they only imported a few thousand of the split window early Bugs to the USA from 1949-53..
"It's all junk to me",he says...
:(

I have seen a dozen or more equally desirable cars & trucks get scrapped there too, over the years...:(

Can understand the scrappers view though. I've parted out a few old military 6x6's. M35a2 stuff sold (minus the frame) within 2 months, m51a2 dump truck stuff took a year to get most of it gone and ended up taking the rest to scrap. Had the 5 ton axles listed at $300 for all 3. Location and being the older model with hydraulic brakes made them impossible to sell here. Same with the trans and tcase
