Anyone tried this on our interior plastics?

There is a bunch of info out there, just curious if anyone has tried it.

I saw reference to RIT in an old post here, but I suspect the plastic formulation is a bit of a change since then. Also mention about using heat if the plastic won't take the color, which for something like door panels would be somewhat difficult to make happen.

If it were me I'd probably pursue one of those paints that's especially designed for interior plastics and vinyl. I always though RIT was designed for fabrics anyway.
 
yup, SEM color coat ftw... dye is for cloth.. plastic don't soak up chit... :haha:
 
People have been using Rit dye on Pmags for a long time with pretty good success. The key (atleast with magazines) is to start with a light color plastic, like tan.
 
That's where I got the idea. Apparently the dye may not work with certain plastics as-is, add heat and it absorbs better.

I'm not saying it works well, but there are videos of people dying ABS, just not sure how deep it goes and how well that would hold up.
 
X4 on SEM. That's not to say RIT won't work. I have no idea. But personally, for the great results I got on mine with SEM, I don't think I'll ever bother trying anything else.
 
I know the SEM comes highly recommended, how does it wear in any area where that tends to happen? I can really only think of the door panels, vinyl seats, or maybe the console in trucks so equipped.
 
I don't have any noticeable wear on anything I've SEM'd yet, but mine isn't exactly a daily driver. But if it did, I figure retreating is simple enough.

non wear items like a dash, it lasts forever.. I have seen it wear some on door panels in heavy use areas like where you lay your arm, etc after 3, 4 yr's... easy to recoat tho...

vinyl seat, no idea... I'm sure you'd see some wear in about the same time...


back in my resto/collision days, I would spray production dye thru guns on vinyl seats, dashes, etc, from paint manny's like PPG, DuPont, etc... not sure which ones still make em...


stuff was more like a RIT dye I suppose, very thin, sprayed thru a gun... it held up damn well.. prolly a bit better than the SEM fo sure..

but we're talking buying in qrts, spraying thru a gun, etc.. not nearly as user-friendly as a rattlecan like the SEM...
