I built mine with the top on too, I also left a little room for my soft top rails.

Only some of it got on my body, but thankfully I don't have a hootus. 
The rest got on the truck.
Did the whole thing a couple of years ago. Holding up fine, it oxidizes over time but scrubs off for the most part. Nothing scratches it, no one leans on it in parking lots and no smart aleck kids hang off it. It's indestructible as far as I can tell. The hood lightened up more than the rest, but I don't care. I could always roller on another coat if I had the inclination.
