roll cages?????

hey latex, maybe you should get a little more educated on this subject, dont blame "Piss poor desings" because you dont have the $$ to spend on dom. that would be like me saying slip yolks are better cause i dont have the $$ now to do the eliminater kit, which is clearly wrong, same w/ dom vs. welded. dont feel bad, im broke too! but you get what you pay for ( $ 2.62/ft. for dom at emj company)

JC - How did your cage come out? I thought you said you were getting it back yesterday.

Personally I think if you're more comfortable using DOM and can afford it thats your business, but to state that HREW is unacceptable for a roll cage is not right either. HREW is also overkill for what we do with our trucks. Bryan brought up a good point in that the strength of a cage is dependant on design as much as the material used to build it. I'd rather have a well designed and built HREW cage than a badly designed DOM cage.

I fabricate steel and aluminum for a living and wouldn't hestitate to use HREW for a cage in my truck.

Just cuz a Rolex is 'overkill' for a watch doesn't mean it tells time better than a Timex...

Took this out of the BITD Rulebook, "Rollcage construction material may be crew, dom, whr, wcr mild carbon steel or 4130 chromoly. 4130 chromoly is highly recommended for all rollcage construction. Stress relieve all welded intersections by flame annealing. All welds must be of high quality and craftsmanship with good penetration and with no undercutting of parent material. Oxy-acetylene brazing on rollcage is strictly forbidden." Know what DOM mild steel and cro-moly is, but what is the other stuff?

it is very nice, just what i wanted, i still have to take it back and get a new passenger side front leg bent to clear the glove box, but no big deal. i put my shoulder belts on today, i still need to paint it but i cant decide between silver or black, i also need to get a new bikini?safari top made for it. i live at kencaryl and wads if you want to check it out. i cant believe we live 5 mi from each other and ive never even seen your truck, (maybe i saw it at discount tire from c-470 a couple years ago) 303-948-3529 thx--j.c.

crew...Cold rolled electrically welded
whr...welded hot rolled
wcr...welded cold rolled

A welded seam tube is still overkill for a cage. Exhaust tubing on the other hand would be considered a really bad choice...

Something else to keep in mind is that the hard cabs really hold up well in a roll over so you don't really have to have the cage built to do it all. The other thing is that no matter what, if you roll, the truck will be totalled, at least sheet metal wise. If you want to be able to roll without major structural damage, build the cage to take it, if it's more of a daily driver street safety thing, it doesn't have to be rigid enough to save the truck, only the people.
