I have a friend who is a die hard pre-runner, baja fan. He's got a sweet ranger with about $30,000 in the suspension. He says that cages need to be welded to the frame and bolted to the body. Unless a rig is intended to blast through the desert at 110mph, bolting to the body, or welding to the body, would suffice correct?

opinions please....

Opinions will rarely settle a debate...

excuse me NOT bolted to the body. He says it'll punch through it like a cookie cutter and the cage will kill you....

That's what the plates are for, to spread the force over a larger area.

If you search, there has been LOTS of debate on this, but IMO either way will work just fine if done right.

This is the key right here. I have seen many cages where the outriggers connecting them to the frame had no bracing at all

The flip side is I have seen cages that were bolted to the floor no backing plate at all.

Either done right will work, in a high speed roll the most important thing is to have your seats and belts mounted to the cage
