The roof of my Jimmy is peeling bad. It seems like metal and not just paint....y'all think this is going to require cutting a huge hole out of the roof and patching it to fix it?

I'm hoping its just every layer of paint coming off and some surface rust underneath...

Thick paint may actually make sense now that I think about it. I inherited it from my dad recently. He got it repainted way back in the late ‘90s. I wonder if they just didn’t take much of the old paint off when prepping to repaint, so it’s almost twice as thick as usual?

I would start scraping and sanding with 80 grit, see what I find. I don't think that it would get worse if you can't see holes by now.
:dunno:

The roof on my pickup looks worse...someone evidently used a few gallons of bondo on the entire roof ,my guess is it got a tree branch impact or someone jumped on it,now the stuff has peeled off in places and is at least 1/4" thick..
Your appears it may have some bondo under the paint too
My magnetic plow beacon wouldn't stick to the roof until I chiseled off an area big enough for the magnet to stick too..it lets water get in too,it rotted the area above the sun visors out long ago,I have waterproofing tape over the holes now to avoid a soaked crotch on rainy days..:doah:

I wonder if I should get all of the paint & surface rust off and get some primer thrown on it to prevent it from rusting through. I don't think I have any leaks at the moment. It'll look like crap, but the truck is tall enough that nobody sees the top anyways

And most primer isn't meant to be exposed to the elements. Some sort of top coat is required.

I'll take it to a paint shop and see what they say. I won't be painting it myself anyways, so I'll see what the cheapest way to protect the metal from rust is. I may get the whole thing painted down the road and I'll worry about looks then. Right now, just trying to prevent it from corroding away

Took the nasty old headliner out. Was worried I’d find rust, but the interior of the cab is beautiful! Not sure if there’s multiple layers of metal on the can roof?
