Considering putting a roof rack on my K5. Anybody know the weight limit on the cap?

Will probably go with a home-made type. Suggestions on attachmeant? How did you handle potential leak problems?

I know the actual K5 fibergalss top will hold two of me ( 250 lbs ) easily , and also take a 5500 pound hit ( K5 backing up , ooops ) on a rock with just a little scar .

Light wiring question

I don't know the load rate for a K5 topper, but I made this for my burb

Those mounts you see there were just temp mounts I made real quick for hunting season the next week lol I finally ended up making my own clamp on mounts that I copied.

These are off a store bought rack with store bought mounts, I just made my own with a little help from Kert.

Nice job on your rack. Was wondering how you got your wireing to the lights without having a leak. I've wanted to put a nice rack on my K5 but don't want to be running wires through the door or window seals. How does everybody usually run the wires?

I drilled a hole in the roof (1 on each side) got some small boat grommets the used black chalking. Never leaked

Did you do the same for the roof screws?

I guess I should look at some retail racks to see how many attachment points for weigh distribution I should use.

500 pounds sounds like a good estimate. Deduct the weight of the rack itself and a little more to be sure. I don't think I'd put over 250 pounds up there anyway but I can see standing up on it to load & unload;)

I bought my blazer with the top patched where the holes were drilled for a roof rack.
There was no leaks and the CB antena and cable were also drilled thru the top, and still are, no leaks there.
The only thing they used was a rubber washer,
The top has taken a lot of abuse from me with no damage, I jumped on it, stepped on it and lifted a truck cab with the help of another guy on the top as well.
The only thing that finally destroyed the top was mi sawzall with a wrecker blade, took me half an hour o cut in pieces i could dump. :D
You can use silicone to seal any wiring sticking out of the top or use a gromet, those work pretty good.
Another trick is to drill on the side not the top so water could run off the hole and still try and water proof it by gomet or silicone.

Thanks for the tips Iceman.

Sawzall vs fiberglass top = garbage can? Ummm, yeah, I'm familiar:D:haha:

Underneigth those "J" plates on the roof I used a rubber/foam pad. I also on the inside of the body, used a full length homeade plate washer with silicone between the plate washer and the roof.
