Rotor question????

parts store gave me the wrong rotors last night.

They gave me the rotors without the wheel studs and hub housing pressed in. Do you think i can beat out the wheel studs and buy new ones and press the new wheel studs and the old hub housing onto the new rotors?
 
You can use a brass drift to remove the studs. There is no need to replace the studs unless there is a bad one or you screw one up removing it. To install the studs use either antisieze or WD40 and draw the studs back in using an open ended lug nut.

Also, if you wanted new hubs and studs when you ordered your parts you needed to specify this. If you just told the parts store you wanted rotors they do not come with the hubs. Now if you told them you wanted hub/rotor assemblies you would have gotten it that way.

It's like a punch, only bigger, and duh, made of brass, so it's *softer* than what you're banging it into, i.e. the stud. This way it won't dent the stud or bung up the threads. If you bang your hammer with its hardened steel face directly onto the studs, after a coupla whacks you'll have an unthreaded mess :( You put the brass thing onto the stud and whack *it*, and it moves without getting damaged. (The drift will eventually get kinda bunged up, but you can fix that with a file or grinder.)

I can't find the dang things on the website but I got a set of two from Harbor Freight for, I donno, less than ten bucks. One's got a pointed end and the other is straight; they're maybe 3/4" in diameter, and hex-shaped for better grip.

I am relaxed ... just frustrated trying to sort out modifiers to WM_KEYDOWN PostMessages in the Windows API, so I browse here to get my mind off my anger at Bill Gates :deal:

I have always removed studs by threading a lug nut on them until the nut is almost all the way on but the top of the stud is not sticking out of the nut. Then hitting with a hammer. This protects the threads. Usually does not hurt the lug nut either.

To install Thread the lug nut on the stud with tapered end facing you. Tighten to draw the stud thru the hub.
Always works for me.

Yeah, I bought a press after doing one set of 32 -- even if you use the impact like you're not supposed to, it's tiring! I did the dually with the press, and at that point it's just plain fun. As long as you don't get your fingers caught :deal:

You can also take the hubs to whatever shop is close that does brakes and drop off the parts to be swapped. I had to replace a rotor while on a road trip once. Found a hotel close to a Pep Boys. Went to see how much they would charge to do the complete fix. Decided they wanted too much, so I bought the rotor went next door to the hotel pulled the hub, walked the parts back over to be swapped, then went back to the hotel to go for a swim while they did the work. It still cost $80 but I didn't have a chance to shop around. Once I got home, I called my local shop and they said it would be $20 per rotor.

I have always thought that when you buy just the rotors and install them on the old hubs the new rotor has to be turned to true the rotor to the hub center line???:confused::confused:

That is very true, not many people do it properly though. Some people here have even lead others to believe you don't need to machine them after being mounted to the hub.
