Just seeing what others think. One of the mechanics at work has a M1009 CUCV Blazer and wouldn't mind selling it as he just occasionally uses it to tow or play with and that's it. A friend of mine back in Michigan was interested but now other things have changed his mind and meanwhile I keep thinking about it as a winter/work beater.

Basically it's rough but not Michigan rough. All the usual issues but not so bad it's falling apart yet. Seems to run good and not leak badly.

-Basically a '84 stripper K5 Blazer
-6.2L J code diesel, TH400, NP208, 10 bolts with 3.08's and Gov-Bomb in the rear.
-33" Mastercraft Courser MT's (Cooper offbrand) with like 50% tread
-Says 70k so I'm thinking 170k.
-Rust in the usual places, missing one rocker, holes in the floors, bottom of tailgate, surface rust here and there, etc. Not Michigan "holy crap what's holding it together?" rust but still there.
-Bootyfab/trailerpark interior with carpet that looks like it's from something else entirely, non OEM seats, and lots of filth.
-Badly painted white at one point.
-Uhm, the rear window is cranked up and down with a set of vice grips or pliers.:p:

Like I said, it's not great but it's all there and seems to run well. He says it's not regularly driven but didn't hesitate to offer to bring it in the next day so I could take pics for my buddy. Which he did and apparently last summer he used it all the time to tow a trailer in and take wood scrap home with him.

He's asking $800 which I think is a no-go. I hear he offered it to another fellow he's worked with for a while for $600. I'm contemplating coming up with $500 and seeing if he'll take it in cash.
I figure for $500 at the worst it's an engine that has less miles and more power than The Blazer's C-code engine along with whatever else I want to scavenge before I junk it for a couple hundred.
Either that or it's my winter beater and/or work truck that keeps me from driving The Blazer in the winter. I get a few winters out of it I'm money ahead.

No pics unfortunately. Trying to find out if my buddy still has the ones I sent him.

$500 sounds good to me but I am a cheap frocker!

I think I'm going to let him sit a while and then ask to see it again.

See if it's worth the hassle of having a 3rd 20+ year old vehicle...but then again I REALLY don't want to drive The Blazer in another winter, but I need 4wd for work and can't get something that gets horrible gas mileage...so it could be ideal...if it's not an immediate POS problem.

Pics of the outside.

I wouldnt mess with that POS, looks like a redneck hack job that youre only going to sink money into.

Are the winters down there bad enough that you have all the salt and crap too?

Yes and no.

Winter like you and I are used to? No, FAR from it.

However they use salt and even the saline solution crap and as SOON as they even think they're getting snow or ice they're out spreading it like it's cool. Then the 1" of snow and ice goes away and the roads are gray/white with it.

There's two kinds of old cars here. The ones that someone actually took care of and they're a bit rusty and the ones that nobody ever took care of and certainly didn't wash underneath and they're rusted out. Again, not Michigan rust but rusted.

So no, I really don't want to drive my trucks in the winter. I can probably do it easier than Michigan but I would much rather have a beater or vehicle I just don't care about. However again, I need a 4x4 for work and it has to get at least okay mileage so it's not eating me alive in fuel costs.

i'd buy it for 500 in a second for the running gear alone. That diesel will give you torque out the ass and those dif. gear ratio's will do great for mileage. IF theres no knocking from the motor or clunking from the tranny id say go for it

p.s what job do you have that requires 4x4. I'd like to do that :)

He needs to get to work when it snows...

I'd consider it for $500, but the hard and fast rule would be not to sink an extra cent into it. The rust is terrible on that thing, the passneger seat belt is bolted to air for example.

If it runs good, and the 4 wheel drive works I'd use the hell out of it for winter. I would also conside a front wheel drive econobox though. You'd be amazed at what kind of wintery crap those will go through almost as easy.

WHat about a Ranger or S10? theyre cheap, and you wouldnt have the "what kind of project could it be" thought like what would happen with another K5.

I actually need it somewhat for that and also for actual work. I basically do inventory control over a couple thousand unissued US military vehicles in a large and spread out area. 8x8 vehicles running 53" Michelins tear up the land and leave big ruts. I HAVE a government vehicle, a POS S10 Blazer 2 door, that is falling to pieces and the front diff won't engage. The superior type folks in my organization won't spend any more money fixing it so when it's gone, it's gone. Winter is coming and basically after this thing dies, it's "drive your own vehicle". Kinda BS but it pays decent so...I'd rather have something that I could abuse for this that isn't sure to get me stuck like the S10 or that I actually love like my trucks.

Find me a $500 4x4 Ranger in good enough working shape that gets the mileage of the diesel K5 and I'll pay attention.
S10's...FAH! See my comment above. POS's...every one of them. GM torsion bar IFS = FAIL.

There is also the irony of using a surplus ex US military vehicle to do inventory on US military vehicles...;)

Rene

Oh yeah.

I dig it. In fact all of our vehicles are gov/military surplus, including the equipment. Too bad they're all being neglected/beat/nickle and dimed to death.

More irony is I already own a CUCV and one of the mechanics just gave me a CUCV brush guard for The Blazer. My collection is increasing.

dang, serious **** up there i guess. Over in California the worst thing we got is rain lol

For $500 I'd jump on that. You say it's hacked together, how well was the hacking done? Some stuff looks real bad but is still safe and functional. Sounds like the current owner would have no problem driving it the way it is. There are rust issues, not nearly as bad (from the pics) as it could be. What does it look like undernetih the carpet and on the bottoms of the floors? If it came down to it, you could probably part/scrap it out and make most of the moeny back. Just don't wait too long or spend too much money before going down that road. Up here that thing would be listed for $1500 and could sell for $1200 easily.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^

When the body gets too pooped out, re-use the running gear and you'll have one hell of a rig in whatever you use it for

I've been told by a member here that he can get me something better so I'm going to see what he has. Will report back. I can afford more if I wait a bit longer so going to see what he has and says.
