So getting ready to assemble my 6.2l and wondering what I need to pick up at the parts store today. These are pretty basic questions, but I would rather ask and get it right then assume and get it wrong.

Here are some areas tha tI have questions on what I should use -

Injectors and glow plugs - never seize
Valve covers - RTV or ???
Water pump backing plate - ??? (had something red and super sticky)
Water pump - rtv?
IP - ???
Intake - rtv??
Flex Plate bolts - ???
exhaust manifolds -???

anything else or any other tips??

"The Right Stuff" is the only RTV (to the best of my knowledge) that is rated to handle diesel/diesel oil. Not sure why, but it's worth using anywhere that will contact engine oil.

Intake and water pump I'd use the proper gaskets, they're not that expensive and much more reliable than RTV for pressure applications like the coolant system. Somebody makes a red spray stuff that I like to use on the paper gaskets to hold them in place and help the seal.

GM and Dodge sell a "House Brand" Black RTV that will cure while soaked in oil etc. The guy at the Parts house had nicknamed it black magic. I ran out and dont have a part number but it is probably the Best Sealer you can get.

I used that sealer in lieu of gaskets for everything except the waterpump to backing plate. Works like a charm

I dunno about the 6.2 but my 1.6vw grounds the glowplugs to the head through the threads. I'd recommend not putting anything on the threads that interferes with the ground circuit. like a spark plug you want good current, and those install dry if I'm not mistaken.

the red sticky spray Wrench mentioned is called Hi-Tack. good stuff. tip for that stuff, glue it to one side only. and make sure thats the side that will be easier to clean if and when the time comes. you'll thank me later.

Injectors and glow plugs - never seize High temp anti-seize. I like Jet-Lube KOPR-KOTE
Valve covers - RTV or ??? Permatex Ultra Black or Ultra Gray. Right Stuff is too thick for most engine sealing jobs.
Water pump backing plate - ??? (had something red and super sticky) Same as above.
Water pump - rtv? Same as above
IP - ??? Gasket only, Dry. The pump needs to be movable for timing purposes.
Intake - rtv?? Dry. The gaskets conform very well
Flex Plate bolts - ??? Loctite. I prefer red (AKA Red Death), but blue is ok.
exhaust manifolds -??? High temp anti-seize.

The only tips I have is not to overdo the RTV. A THIN layer is all that is needed. Get some good nitrile surgical-type gloves, and use your fingers to smear the stuff onto the gaskets. If there is no gasket in a given joint, smear it onto the metal. Make sure there's no spots that are TOO thin, and no voids, but you definitely don't want to glob it on. It should just barely ooze out when you tighten the parts up.

Don't put the valve covers on until you pre-oil that thing! Watch and listen to the valvetrain carefully while you turn the engine over after the lifters are pumped up. This is a close tolerance, high lift, untested setup. I did my best to check and double check everything, but in the end you never know till you get the lifters pumped up and get it running.

i RARELY use RTV...way too many uninformed mechanics pump that **** everywhere.... if it is a gasketed surface it should NOT have rtv on it... gasket sealants or adhesives should be used the majority of the time if anything is needed, very different product base... there are very specific situations to use rtv, intake gasket corners, 4 piece pan corners, etc...
