I'm putting my new dif cover on my 14 bolt today (maybe) it depends on how long I have to let the RTV set before I put fluid back in. -Tell me what I want to here....that i'll be good to go in less then 6 hours /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

Re: RTV question

ya i used a gasket, but i put the fluid in right away with the balck RTV and drove it right away and no leaks

This may be a little late, but if you have a flat cover (no voids to fill in with sealant) the best, leak free combination I've found is a gasket with sure-tack gasket adhesive on both sides. That stuff rocks! Never had anything leak after using that stuff.

As for the RTV route, I tend to use one or the other--a gasket or RTV. I apply the RTV and let it "skin" for a few minutes, then assemble as normal. I've added fluid with in a few minutes after assembly, sometimes succesfully and sometimes not. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

How do you like the cover, I've been looking at the same cover for my project axles /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

well those pictures were taken about three hours ago...So far I love it! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

i usually end up just letting the RTV skin for 5 mins or so, and then bolt the thing on. Then I leave it sitting for a few hours (or overnight if its late) and put the oil in. Never have any leaks from my GLO cover.

Blue RTV, wait a beer or two and stick it on.

I usually wait about 10-15 minutes or whatever.

the blue rtv is made for use on water gaskets: ie waterneck, waterpump etc. black is for oil gaskets, thats why they are different colors

I always use the grey on everything. Never had a problem.

As for waiting, I ually draw a bead on the cover, then smooth with my first finger & bolt it right on. Then I go ahead and put in the lube. If I were to wait, I'd proly forget it and then I'd be screwed. Never had a leaking problem (knock on head - ouch)

Been doing it for YEARS and so have a lot of people I know. Nevers leaks either. But, I do change it a lot. So, that could be why.

I will contiue to use it.
