After hitting a few bumps/potholes on the drivers side front tire, occasionally I get a weird rubbing sound like something is rubbing on the tire or rim. It goes away instantly if I tap on the brakes. I am thinking ball joints, but hoping it could be something simple. Anyone have any ideas? Also this is on a 1987 K5. All stock.
Thanks!

I would tend to suspect brakes or wheel bearings.
I think you have front disks.
If a wheel bearing gets loose, it will rub on a brake pad or part of the truck, but usually run true for a little while when you center it by hitting the brakes.
Also, you could have a problem with a pad.

Should be easy to spot, just jack the front end up and spin the tires.

NOTE: You might want to do this right away.
I had the same noise after doing some tree moving in my truck. It did not change when I hit the brakes, and was faint enough for me to ignore until I had time.
I figured I had a branch caught somewhere.

That afternoon, I had to hit the brakes hard to dodge a dog, and lost all front brakes.
Turned out that I had bent the metal part of the front hose where it went into the front caliper, (it was a Ford) and the rubber part was rubbing on the inside of the tire.
Finally wore far enough through that it blew out.

Yea, sounds like a wheel bearing gone bad. Jack up front wheel and see if there is any wobble by grabbing tire and shaking up and down then side to side.

alright I will check the wheel bearings. Probably should change them out anyways. also this is definitely not a faint rubbing sound. Its really loud and if someone is next to me in the other lane, they speed up thinking my truck is going to fall apart or something lol.

I've seen 4WD trucks with loose wheel bearings ,that let the rim rub against the brake caliper due to letting the rim tilt inwards--and one truck had the rim so worn it was paper thin, and just about ready to let all the air come out with a POW!...stepping on the brakes clamps the pads against the rotor, takes up the play in the bearings, thats why it goes away with the brakes on most likely...

I'd check the wheel bearings & lug nuts NOW!--dont drive it another mile till you do...those people next to you on the highway are flying past you for a reason!...

I had the same issue.......it was my right front Hub! It came apart while I was driving.........

Get it checked ASAP!!

Well, he has not posted since............Hope he checked them in time.

Anybody read about a one car K5 wreck in ID?

lol..........too funny!! Fordum, when I see that you've responded to a thread I subscribe to I can't wait to read what you've posted......

Well, I try.....
But you know, its not uncommon for someone to post a problem, get some answers, fix the problem and never post back.

But in this case, it sounded like he may be about to lose a wheel, so not coming back might be a bad thing.

I was just wondering.......

Hey ya'll! Been meaning to get on here and post an update. I went to autozone and bought all new wheel bearings, but haven't had a chance to take it apart and put the new ones in yet! Surprisingly, it hasn't done the weird rub thing in a whole month! So I am not sure what it was, but for now it is gone. Hoping it stays that way for another month, cause I am going back to autozone and getting new upper and lower balljoints, then gonna knock it all out in one whack! Thanks for all your guys info! I really appreciate it.
