Rubicon July 2023

The rivers are rippin here too. Doesn't effect the rubicon trail other than some areas with standing water that are heavily controlled.
Oh gotcha. I thought I'd seen videos of water crossings but that must have been a different trail.

For those of you that have run the trail, we are planning on staying in Pollock Pines and starting from there. What's the best (most fun) route to the trail from there? Everything I'm seeing so far is just a paved road all the way to Loon Lake on that side of the trail. Is that correct, or am I missing something?

Yep.
That is the closest access from pollock pines.
Do you have an acquaintance there or why did you choose that town to stay at, coming from Utah I wouldn't have gone that far to back track to the trail

We unloaded at the north end of the trail. Left the semi and trailer there. Drove to Loon Lake and camped there the first night. Hit the trail the next morning.

Yeah it's 3 hours drive from one end to the other on the road to get back to the tow truck

It's kind of an evolving plan. My understanding was Fresh Pond is the last fueling chance before starting the trail. So I was looking for the closest hotel which is a Best Western in Pollock Pines. Then my mom was interested in coming along for the road trip portion, not the trail. Looking at home rentals, the best value and bed situation was in Pollock Pines.

It seemed like from what I was finding we're driving good bit no matter what we do, particularly with my mom staying at a rental place.

Plus I like that there's a Safeway in Pollock Pines to stock up before starting the trail.

What am I missing? Looks like only 1.5 hours to return.

I think he's referring to the distance between each trail head. Pollock pines to Loon lake is an easy hour plus.

correct and bring a gas can with you! I burn over 5 gallons between fresh pond and the trailhead at loon. It's a steep curvy road.
