Run on

Hi all. New to forums, but I've been lurking for a couple of years. I love this site.

My question is this: new 350 long block, new carb and coil, new plugs and wires. I get run on unless I turn it off in gear. I've tried everything. So I took it to a mechanic, and he fixed it. After 2 days, it starts again. He fixes it again (says he's just adjusting timing). After a couple of days, it starts again. So, I figure timing chain is faulty. I change it, time it, and TA DA! No change. Still get run on! Before I give up and just buy a whole new engine, is there something I'm missing here? I've checked all the vacuum stuff, checked the carb, etc... Any other suggestions?

Oh yeah, it's on a '76 with all stock componants under the hood.

Might be running rich, which could mean extra fuel in the combustion chambers causing it to diesel(run on).

The 3 main causes of dieseling are timing, high idle or carbon build up...

Whats the mileage? I would look at the carb and maybe give it a SeaFoam treatment if the mileage is up there..

The engine only has about 8k on it, and all that was put on while the problem persisted. It was new. Don't think it's running rich, I've tried tow different carbs on it and adjusted them both up and down with no change.

It does idle high, but I can't get the idle down without it stalling on me when I put it in drive. That must be it, what can I do now?

the high idle is gonna be your issue...

I'd look to a minor vacuum leak to be causing this.. Thats usually what it is when that issue occurs... Maybe a base gasket...

Anytime..

Once you correct the stalling issue, reset that idle...

Turn the idle down and just power brake it, or neutral hop it. lol Naw, but I wouldn't rule out something goin on with the carb. what color is the inside of the tail pipe? also when looking for a vaccum leak. check all them hoses goin to everything. And also spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold-head or carb-intake manifold.
