My 1975 K5 runs great 90% of the time 'cuz 90% of the time its on pavement. For the last few visits to the desert it starts running rough after 1/2 hour or so on the dirt roads. The idle gets lousy, exhaust smokey, it can back fire through the carb. When you punch it well past idle it will clear up but then falter again as you back off on the gas. Adjusting the edelbrock does no good even though it seems like its running rich. Any attempt at rock climbing would make it run like hell and stall when you least need it. When back on pavement and running continuously at a higher RPM the problem stops. I have an edelbrock carb and intake, HEI, RV cam, no computer stuff. Thanks for any advice!

I agree with JMS, and when I did that mod it helped some. I also blocked the crossover passage. I felt like I had my 1406 set up pretty good. You might also try the blockage trick and/or lowering your float so long as y.ou dont run out of fuel on acceleration

That is, until I bolted on a JY Quadrajet in need of a rebuild. It was like trading in a ford festiva for a Corvette. Ran much better on road, warms up better, offroad is more than i expected, and linkages are easier.

Sorry for preaching, but dont let the bad rep of the "Quadrajunk" close your mind.

OK, I found the off road kit at summit racing and I'll see how that works. Being out in the desert IS always better than being at work even when the K5 is acting up! Thank You for your help
