well i took the rig and got it titled and attempted to get it emissioned today...well it didn't pass. the only thing it failed was carbon monoxide in grams per mile. allowable is 48, the truck was pushing out 50.15.

so i guess my question is, how hard is it to lean it out. it has been sitting for a while prior to my purchase, i'm not so sure how good the gas is in the tank, or how clean the carb really is. although it dose fire right up. anyone else come this close, yet this far away from passing?

thanks guys

I might be able to lend a hand, don't have the sniffer at home, but I could probably lean it out and you could try again.

Try a little "Heet" additive on about half a tank. Will help it now to pass emis, but drop the primary jetting back just a step or 2.

How are the plugs, oil, air cleaner?

i honestly haven't looked at the plugs. but i'm guessing probally not the greatest. i plan on swapping plugs, wires, rotor and cap, and i ahve to change the oil. it doesn't look to bad on the dipstick, but god knows how long it was sitting before. The air filter looks pretty good, but i may updgrade anyways. It is also idling high, around 800ish when in gear, closer to 1000 in park. i need to adjust that.

thanks guys

said it before, saying it again. e85. in your case, one gallon of e85 with 9 of gas should easily work. mine blew the test away.

how can i find out who around me carries e85?

Last I heard you might have to drive to Tucson for the next station that carries E85 - that was 2 months ago, though, when I was working on smogging Claudia's FJ40.

That's all Heet is, it's alcohol. If you don't find e85, poke over to the local sprint car shop and buy a gallon of methanol:rolleyes:

looks like 90 miles is about as close as you'll get. would be worth it (put in a gas can, not the tank for the drive, obviously) if you're heading anywhere near there, anyway. i'm lucky enough to have 2 stations between work and home. but yeah, HEET, racing alcohol, etc. will do about the same thing. they just cost more and are more of a hassle to get (for me).

Change your oil & plugs. Run some of the old gas out and fill up with some new 87 octane and add 2 bottle of rubbing alcohol from Walgreens. Drive it like you stole it on the way to emissions and if the testing center is close drive it around before going there. You want to get the Cat Converter nice & hot. If you have OD dont run it on the way over there so the motor stays in a higher RPM band to get the cat hotter.
