I'm stuck in a storage unit that has only 115 volts in it for lighting/small tools etc.

I have a 5500 watt generator and a miller 225 mig...

5500 watts / 220 VAC will give me about 25 amps.... Think it will pulll the mig at about mid setting ?? :dunno:

anyone run their welder off of a generator ?

farmer friend just tryed to do this with gen unit that had 110 15 amp and 110 - 20 amp but special plug .

we tryed the 15 amp std plug on 110 mig and just over 1/2 power. it wouldnt do a arc . it made the gen buck skip . and the weld was just pop pop pop no heat or penitration.

we gave up and limped it back to reg land and shop and welded fine on elecric pole stuff like normal.

I use a 9000 watt gen to runn my 220 stick welder can turn it up to I believe 190 I have also used a 110 mig

Yeah i too am buying a gene for welding. going with a 10,000 watt because i tripped the breaker once on a 7500 watt. Figure i will be safe this way.

The mig seemed to work better than the stick because the stick can be a little hard to strick the arc sometimes off the generator

We have generators at work that can power an entire city block so i'm sure it will power ANY welder. :D

I plugged a miller 251 into a generator and it blew out the circuit board...to make it worst it was brand new -just got it that day. I run my 211 on my champ 10000 it works ok, I wouldn't recommend doing this with any welder that is solidstate or has any type of computer unless it's a high quality clean power generator
