Running BB\'s in the tires?

I've heard you can run BB's in the tires for balancing them, does this work? they would make alot of noise would'nt they? clear this up for me,cause 38"s are hard to balance /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

If you do a search you'll find some recent discussion on this. Consensus is that it usually works pretty darn well, but for some it has not taken all of the vibration away. For 38s you probably want about 8-10 ounces. They make a little noise when coming to a stop, the noise was described as one shake of a set of maracas. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?

I run 8 oz's in my 35 inch swampers...no one in town could balance them . They do make an odd noise when you stop but they balance the tires fine to 65 mph. Shakes a quite a bit after 65 so I dont go there:) The tires are awesome so its worth it to me to have them jingle a little lol

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?

so how do you do it?
do you throw the tire on the balancer
find out how much its off
break down the tire
weigh the bb's
put them in the tire
mount the tire on the rim
put back on balancer to find out the results
is this how you would go about doing it? or can you put them through the valve stem?? /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?

I just put the bb's in with one of the beads off ...remounted it with the bb's inside....filled it with air and drove it.

the balancer couldnt help you the first time around...what makes you think it will after the bb's are in?

its not like you could move the bb's around if it wasnt just right lol

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?

I think I remember some tire balancing goo for motorcycles that looked kinda like a can of fix-a-flat... Hmmm... why not use water?

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?

that goo is slime...and it isnt for balancing, its to seal the tires in case if u get a flat. that stuff works awesome. i used to use it when i raced dirt bikes

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?

so how much BB's do you put in? is there a set amount?? and you would use the balancer the first time right? I see what your talking about by rebalancing the tire after you put them in. /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?

No, you don't use a balancer first. If you could use a balancer, then you would balance the tire with the clamp-on weights like normal size tires. The only reason for using BB's is the tire is too big for a balancer, so you don't know where or how much weight to add.

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?

not the same as i 'member. this stuff was different - for actually balancing the tire. anyway i guess the way the bb thing works is that they spread out around the inner circumfrence and that way balance out the tire. seems to me that water would do the same thing and be more quiet when you stop. the trick with anything is getting the right amount so you dont set the tire BACK out of balance at a certain speed.

Even at your normal highway speeds? If they work at 80mph, I'd be willing to sacrifice a few balls for the tires. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?

My grandfather has used (still uses) an old mustard bottle filled with half&half (coffee creamer) as a stop leak and internal tire ballancer the only catch to this is that when you change a tire the cheese that is left over can smell really bad but it will hose right out and will not harm the tire or rim. To use you just take the valve stem out and air down. Place the mustard bottle with half&half onto the valve stem and fill the tire with one bottle of said dairy product. Replace valve stem and air back up. I have used this 3 years ago on my garden tractor tire with a hole that you could fit a #2 pencil through and till this day it still holds air and I have never had to add any air since I put this in. You will never have a leak again, your tires will ballance every time and if you get hungery on the trail and you brought crackers your set.

Re: Running BB\'s in the tires?
