I have an 85 K5 with those heavyweight checkered plate running boards fitted, how easy are they to remove? Also, will I need to touch up paint etc afterwards? or do they bolt directly to non painted parts? I mean, I just want to take them off , not to have to repaint the lower half of the body or anything

they all mount a little different yank em off and see.i think mine had them at 1 time in its life, all it left(on mine)was a line of bolt holes in the rocker flange.nothin major.

PURE INSANITY

Take a look underneath the truck. Most running boards are installed using some sort of strapping/tubing bolted to the frame. The only place my old boards were attached to the body was on the inner lip of the wheel wells, and this was done with sheet metal screws. None of my paint was affected at all............

I have seen running boards that have been attached to the rockers as well. If that's the case with yours, you've either got to live with it or get your welder out and fill the holes in.

I had alloy boards by DEE-ZEE . I got rid of them before the first time I went wheelin . Running boards & 4x4's dont match unless you dont go offroad .

My running boards were attached to my rockers and to something underneath. I just took a 1/2 drill bit and took care of them bolts...now if I had known at the time my Dad had a cut off tool hidden.....

BTW...I still have a set of bookshelves to give away for free....

Roads? Where we're going, we don't need any roads!

Running boards should be outlawed on everything but soccer mom rigs. My K5 had the diamond plate running boards on it. The lower lip of the rocker pannel had 6 or so holes drilled through it so the boards could attach and it had one support beam running from the bottom of the board to the bodies frame. I hate whatever idiot put them on there. I've got serious rust on my inner rockers, so this summer I'll be following DepDog's example and using 2" x 3" steel tubing

I'm not a "soccer mom", and I have running boards. Keep in mind before you make such statements that some of use our K5s as daily drivers, and that some of us have young kids that aren't be able to get up into the truck without a step. I also appreciate the way running boards protect my paint/body from the piles of gravel liberally applied to the local roads in winter.............

Canmore, heh, sorry, didn't mean anything by it. And believe me I understand about k5 being a daily driver. Mine sure as heck is (high school kids budget doesn't allow for multiple cars...and YES I pay for all the k5 on my own

). I don't mind so much how they look or that people have em. Just pissed me off when I took the ones off my K5 and found mass amounts of the rust monster. My appologies

Lets see, transfer case hangs lower than running boards and so do the axles. Hmmmm, I've been burried over my axles to many times. Don't recall the running boards being an issue. With rocks they might protect the body if you don't have rock rails.

I never mentioned them being a clearance problem. My main gripe with running boards is they are good pals with the rust demon (in most of the cases I've seen any way). I personally prefer Nerf bars to running boards(and I prefer not having anything to having either nerfs or R.B's). No place for that mud to get stuck up in and you don't have to drill the rockers. Its all personal prefance.
