I have a 1987 k 5 with stock running gears. I am wanting to swap over to a dana 60 and a 14 bolt corporate. I have not personally use this set up but have seen a lot of people running this in there blazers. looking for any advice from you guys that have experience with this as I am a newbie to it.

What, specifically, do you want to know? It's pretty much a straight forward swap. The front is a bolt in. The rear is marginally more difficult if it is sourced from a 1 ton truck.

There are a lot of people here using those axles. I suggest you do some searching and reading here on ck5. You are Bound to find what you are looking for. Btw welcome to ck5! You just found the best source of info for your k5.

I guess my biggest question is is there any modifications that have to be done to the dana 60 in the front or the 14 bolt f f in the rear? or do they just boat ride up to what is already there?

The D60 is 90% bolt in. You'll need new u-bolts and the brake hoses may not fit the caliper bolts. The stock steering drag link will bolt up.

A 14 bolt from a 3/4 ton truck is 90% bolt in with the shock mounts and spring perches being in the same position. A 14 bolt from a 1 ton will need the spring perches and shock mounts relocated. You'll need new u-bolts and either a new 1350 size yoke on the driveshaft or a conversion u-joint.

Driveshaft mods are a given as the rear length may not be right as well as the previously mentioned yoke size. The front will bolt up but, again, the length may not be right.

Of course, you'll need new wheels.

All of this is above and beyond the cost of getting the axles ready to go under the truck (ie; bearings, seals, brake parts, ratio & locker upgrades, etc).

That's all I can think of quickly but I'm sure there's more...

Dana 60 front is straight bolt up. Here's the but...... if your upgrading to a d60 your planning on lifting the truck and putting on larger tires, so upgrading to crossover steering is almost a must (stock steering on a lifted truck SUCKS). If you do crossover you also have to remove the sway bar. Your wheels will have to be 16's or larger. You can run 15's, but.....A LOT of grinding and careful selection of offset is required. Driveshaft will have to be modified, shortened a little and a different yolk (takes a different u-joint).

Now for the 14b...... 1ton you'll have to cut off the spring perches and move them. You will also have to move the shock mounts and mod driveshaft (shorten and change yolk) If the 14b is from a 3/4 ton it's straight bolt up affair except for the driveshaft mods.

Once the axles are in you will need to change to a one ton master cylinder because the stock one doesn't move enough fluid to give a good pedal feel and stopping power.

All of this is also dependent on the year of your truck and the year of the donor axles. The brakes may or may not just bolt up. The later brakes are metric and the early are standard, so if you mix years the brake lines won't interchange.

So in short.....NOT a straight bolt in, if done right.

Depending on how you plan on using your truck and what tire you'll be running, a 3/4 ton axle swap may be a better idea. If done from the same year as your truck it's a bolt in, only driveshaft mods in the rear.

The drawback to a 3/4 ton swap is the front axles are the same strength as 1/2 ton just with better brakes and 8 lug outers.

Edit....... Damn I must type slow nvrenuf beat me to it

I plan on running 36 maybe 38" tires at the most. so are you saying I should look for axles that came out of the 1987 since that is what I have?

If your K5 is an 87 then mid to late 80's axles should match up, at least as far as brake lines go.

I'm assuming your building it for mud mainly, so do you plan on running Boggers or just mud tires, AKA TSL's, BFG's, ect. How big is the engine? Stock 350......Built 572 W/ NOS? Just curious which axles would better suit your app.

Mainly just a truck to goof off in. It actually has a stock 305 but I have plans for a 383 stroker motor. As far as tires really umdecided right now. Are any of the axels I need found in the military 1008, or 1009?
