I'm looking to test my steering and find out why it sucks so bad. This is on my C10 btw. I'd like to run the truck around without PS. So I'm not sure how to accomplish this. Pull the lines off the box, dump fluid all over the ground and then what? What do you think?

Also, when I pull the pump's cap off, it lets out a quick hissss. Why the hell? This is a hydroboost pump but with the 3rd return line plugged.

well if you remove the lines from the box, everytime you move the steering it will shoot out a stream until its empty.
you can run a loop for the pump.

The last hydro pump I had I was told I needed to loop the hyrdo port back around and not cap it.

Ended up buying a non hydro pump for the same year as donor.

As Eric says run a loop from outlet to inlet and a line from the hydroboost line into the top of the pump body...that's how I did my initial fireup on the Maiden

How about using the proper pump for your application? A hydroboost pump has different pressure and flow than a non-hydroboost pump.

Well that's all fine with me. It's the pump that came with the engine and I figured that upper nipple was just a return from the brakes. It goes nowhere other than into the reservoir. I'm sure the pressure is higher, but does it go through the brakes first, get toned down some and then into the steering? Just not real interested in buying a new pump just to buy a new pump. My steering is so tight and without any RTC, this is the problems I'm trying to work out. Figured if I disconnect the pump, one less thing I can point my finger at.

:(

In my experience, running a hydro - boost pump won't bother at all. I have been doing it for years. I put it in a standard reservoir since I had parts laying around. That was 40K ago.

Loop the lines some how on both the box and pump, and make sure that you have some oil in the pump.

As far as the lack of return, I don't see how the steering pressure could cause your problem, unless the box has an internal problem. But I can't say for sure...
