I have an 89 with a 350. Last night after starting it I revved it a couple of times and black smoke came out. So that means it's running rich right? Isn't that contolled by the computer though? So shouldn't it fix itself?

Did you drive it? If the ECM sees a rich condition too long once the vehicle is warmed up, it will throw a code, assuming the O2 sensor is fine.
Plenty of things could cause a rich condition though, best to wait until it throws a code, or you put a scanner on it and see what the problem is.
