rust belt fun times ( pics up ) UPDATE: frame = swiss cheese new plan

I've been a sheetmetal advocate since I joined :deal:

Some of the builds I've seen here (while badass) make me want to puke, like come on you couldn't find a crappier truck to do that to?

But remember, we always have something on those south westerners...
our dash boards aren't cracked and brittle :flipoff7:

Cough mtblazer cough cough :haha:

And true on the rubber stuff, the seals from out there are always such junk!

I could not live in the rust belt no way no how. Clean factlry sheet metal is so hard to come by it's sad it has to die like that in the rust belt.

It's sad that all the junkyards out west crush it all. At least your yards have better picking. Most of the yards out here limit their inventory to 10 years. Anything older than that goes straight to the crusher. There is one local yard here with a "classic" section. And even that stuff is 80s or so. The few old C/Ks they have don't have much left or are rusty old piles.

i got a few new parts for it

reuse old motor/wiring/seat's/lightbar/t-case/dana60/front springs/89-91 front nose . the rest will be good used recycled parts.

well back from the dead .

drove the old girl in the shop today and blew out the p/s line from rust also .

but took off the flat bed that needs full new skin for the deck .

next I took a air hammer with a button head bit and ripped up/down the whole back half frame to find out just how bad the frame is .

well lets just say it will drop from 135" wheel base to around 101" - 105" wheel base when I am done . and the flat bed @ 8ft 6" long will get chopped down to 5ft even and reinstalled .

few more of pass side frame / hanger and the left overs of a frame that hit the floor with no cutting tools . :doah:

Lots of clean trucks out here in Colorado! Troll CL western slope if it is close I can check it out for you.

..that IS bad!...my truck isnt that bad yet, give it some time though and it will be,sadly..

Whats weird is the front half of the frames on my 4x4's dont seem to rot anywhere near as bad as the part behind the cab...one truck I had,the 71 GMC K1500 had some real thin spots in the rear half of the frame,I sold it as it was,but was tempted to just keep it and chop the frame off right behind the cab,and use 6" channel iron to make two new straight "rails" and keep it for a yard truck, make it shorter to make plowing tight areas easier..

I saw a 72 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 with a plow for sale locally about a year ago on someones lawn..I stopped, looked inside, its interior was pretty nice!..not much cab or rocker rot either!..no bed on it though, and when I saw the frame on the drivers side,my heart sank...there was practically NONE from the front hanger of the rear spring back, just like Sweet K30's truck..:(..was very repairable though, too bad I had just cut up and junked a decent '73 K10 frame that probably was almost identical to it,or close enough,to use it, a month earlier..they wanted 1500 bucks for it..
I passed, but felt bad about walking away from it!..

Makes me ill when I see trucks with better bodies and frames in the boneyards..till I need a frame, that is..then none exist!..
