I've decided to take the jump and rust bullet my whole 71 jimmy. i will start with the frame. iam gunna blast it to bare metal then rust bullet, fix anything that needs to be fixed and strengthen the frame. the same will be done to the body. my question is has anyone done this and how much should i buy?

I put 2 coats onto my frame with just 1 can and it went on real thick. I also slapped on a coat of RustBullet BlackShell ontop of that.
I wish i would have sprayed it on instead of brush, i think it would have went on more even and smoother if i had sprayed it and i might have been able to use less that way.
Cover up though, i got the stuff all over my hands, arms, legs, and even hair and that stuff does NOT come off very easy at all.

thanks for the advice! would you say the stuff is worth its weight in gold? also is that blackshell as tough as they claim?
I have no experience with Rust Bullet, only POR-15. You can get a reducer for the POR-15 to thin it out for spraying. Lays down nice and smooth.

Did all the innards to my firewall (cowl, vent, airboxes, etc). The stuff is tough, but not impenetrable. It can be scratched and knicked, as I found out by trying to replace a modified cowl panel. But it still holds up way better than paint. Guessing about 5x more durable...
This stuff dries hard and each coat (need 2) goes on thin. Foam brushes work real good and RB seems to self level. It can be sprayed, but haven't seen what proportions to use. Not sure if I'd want to use this in a good gun though... I used one of those drill attachment for mixxing. It's got about six coats on it now, and I can't even get it to chip off, lol.
Gonna guess it will take 4-5 cans to do what it sounds like you are wanting to do. Daves frame took one can, my firewall took about a pint. Could pry do the whole exterior metal with about 1.5 cans. Interior of the tub will take probably one can.

thanks fellas. i was trying to decide if i should buy the 6 quart combo or but a 5gal bucket of it i checked their FAQ and they say a open container has a shelf life of 6months...pretty lame. looks like ima start with the 6 quarts and if i need more ill get more. but unopened shelf life is still only 2 years.
They have an aerosol reducer product so you can spray it.

well lucky for you i just finished doing a 2 year body off that did exactly what u are about to do... it took about 2 quarts to do the frame 2 coats. one can of blackshell for my inside frame rails (outside i did chevy orange spray) under side of the bed took a quart of each rb and blackshell ( 2 coats each) cab floor and underside was about a quart... booth axles took about a quart of each. i just bought quarts as i needed because once you open the can either u need to get the rim spotless or the cap will stick and u will need to cut the can open (ask me how i know)... you wont go wrong with this stuff its some serous $H!T. dont get it on clothes or hands. if you do gasoline or paint thinner it b4 it drys or your screwed... im very happy with this stuff and you will be too when u see how hard the brushes are after they dry for a few days. heres some pics of my junk... someday ill make a build thread

it took ALOT of work to get it to that state. rockers, corners, just about every support on the bed was replaced
Easy way to prevent this is to stick some plastic like a zip lock bag or a thick ceran (sp?) wrap across the jar before putting the lid in place. It might stick a bit but probably not enough to become fused to the can. Worked great with my POR15 and other products I've used in the past. Had cans of it sit for a year and still have usable product in it when I reopened them.
I put a thin piece of plastic over the can and then put the lid on and had to problems getting it open. I did have to plan everything out though so that everything was ready to get coated so i didnt have to leave the cans open for more than a couple days.
The stuff is tough though, your brushes will turn into bricks in a few days and i mixed it with a big old screwdriver and once i was done with everything the screwdriver was a 1" thick solid block of dried rustbullet. I am sure it can be chiped like anything else but its probably the toughest stuff next to a bedliner.
