I'm here with the same question. My 79 from AZ had no rot, until I pulled the top off for the first time and was slapped with similar issues. What's the best possible way to fix roof rust issues?
cut back for custom or donor patch.. media blast as best possible... prime/convert as needed.... burn in.. body work.. pray....
crusty door jambs and windshield surround can be a death knell on these rigs..... hopefully it stayed as localized as possible... cutting all the bad out for the actual patch first allows you to concentrate your rust removal effort on remaining stuff that can migrate in the future....
I'm no welder for sure lol. I cut a complete roof off a rusted out 79 Jimmy (Roof of course being completely solid). I don't know if it's better to try and patch or try to replace the whole roof skin. I'd like the repair to be as correct and long lasting as possible.
cut it open and see how extensive it looks... either way, that will be going away.. sneak up on it.. if it's localized, clean/patch.. vastly easier job than a whole skin replacement..
if your lucky, you can keep your upper cut in that upper groove and not even get into the "exposed sheetmetal" area... that will help tremendously putting a patch in.. the bodyline rigidity will save a ton of distortion possibilities...
