I’m assuming this case was either half full of water at some point or years of condensation build up rusted most of the intervals that weren’t submerged in oil.

How bad is it to reuse gears that have pitting? It’s not terrible, but enough to ask here. Any experience?

Depends on how pitted and rusty. I had a 205 that was drained of oil and sat around in a shed for years. When I pulled it out and went through it there was some rust and pitting on some of the gears. Not sure if it was from condensation or if it had some snow or water get on it. It was in a beat up old shed. The bearing surfaces were all fine but the gear teeth were the issue. Cleaned it up with steel wool during the rebuild with new bearings. No problems, still running it.

Agreed. Unless the gears look like a golf ball, buff 'em and run 'em. That said, be much more critical of the bearings and seal surfaces.

Thanks guys. That’s what my gut was telling me.

I do have to get a couple of new gears though. There is some pitting on the rear output shaft and low gear needle bearing surfaces.

Good call. Came here to say gears are no big deal. Bearing surfaces should be more heavily scrutinized.
