Rust Question

A buddy of mine is trying to take care of his rust issues in his floor. He has ordered replacement floor panels, but wants to know if he should cut out the existing rusty ones .... or POR 15 them, put on an epoxy and then weld the new ones in on top of the old....

Any help is appreciated....

To Cutout Or Not

Rusty....you or your buddy should hire a welding shop / and experienced restoration shop. Have body dipped and then let them take it a part and refabricate new metal into vehicle.

In reality this is a nightmare! Can't honestly tell you it's easy! It will take 3 times the time you would like to budget. Have been there, done it....good luck.

When your done spray the floors, top side etc with por 15.

He doesn't want to restore it, he just wants to have the floor so that his feet don't go through it, and so it will last (somewhat)...

Definitely NOT going to be removing the body and having it dipped...Cheap and Cheap...

definitely cut out the bad metal.. you don't want big overlapping areas.. just places for moisture to get at and rust to continue on its merry way.... the best way is to, get panels, cut for a couple inchs overlap. the best way is to use a step tool and form a lip an inch or so for it to sit in.. 1 to 3" of flat will be fine tho...

clean whats left by grinding, blasting, whatever.. do not sandwich bare steel sections. guys always do that. grind the **** out of all sides, lay it on top and weld it.. now ya have a bare steel sandwich.. it is well advise to prime all areas with a weldthru primer after grinding before fitting together and welding..
