Rustoleum...or cheap single stage automotive paint?

I would get better paint for that thing than rustoleum, I painted my nova with a cheap flat black tractor paint and it faded almost the next week.

That truck is pretty nice, and I think you would be better off doing it right the first time.

Agreed. Now I just gotta figure out if I can fit a paint job into my 3 week build window. I'm only gonna be home in Cali for 3 weeks on leave. That's where all the tools are. Then it's back to Georgia. I've got a LOT to do in those 3 weeks-

Install Alcan's and DIY4x shackle flip.
Mount and groove the Michelins.
Run up to High Angle Driveline and build a new front shaft. For the cost of parts only btw. ;)
Install shift kit and new deep trans pan.
Install Ballastic Fab crossover and new tie rod.
Install frame repair kit and brace.
Install ORD HD engine x-member.
Install Bilstien 5150's.
Install new carpet.
Install train horn kit.
Fix A/C.
Install XJ Shaft.
Build bumper and install Ramsey Patriot 12k winch.
Install Odyssey battery
Install Powermaster 140amp alternator.
Install new head unit and speakers
Find new front seats. I want buckets up front. Craigslist, Pick N Pull etc.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, theres a $6k pile of UPS and Fed-Ex packages full of parts waiting for me at my gramps place. :eek1::woot:

And between all that, I gotta find me a willing woman, or two. Gotta drink a lot. Go shooting a lot. Eat a lot. More woman, more tequila and New castle. More woman. Gonna be a busy 3 weeks. Might not have time to do paint as soon as I thought. :haha:

KdJethro, if I had a truck that was that clean, I'd probably opt to prep the car myself, take off all the trim, mask everything, do any body work, skim coats whatever your goal is. then take to a professional paint shop just to shoot a nice urethane.

You should still be able to get it done cheap by doing all the prep work, but by having a pro shoot it in a booth you let them worry about all the health hazards associated with the nicer auto paints, and you don't have to have to deal with the stress of "learning" on your nice truck.

for the cost of the ventilation system you'd need to safely shoot urethanes you could just have a pro shoot your paint for you if you did the prep work.

I did bodywork and painted my 71 (with a single stage) earlier this summer. I did have a lot of time into the bodywork, but no way that I would try and add a paint job to that list with only 3 weeks, but I'm pretty slow and always seem to run into problems. Your truck looks relatively straight and should be straightforward to get paint on.

Have you looked into Maaco? I hear they can paint well and are very cheap if you do most of the prep and body work.

The single stage turned out good (I would not be happy if it was a show car). I'll try to post a pic or 2 this weekend. Oh, and I didn't use a fresh air hood so I am poisoned now. :eek1:

So you have 3 weeks of leave, then you are stationed in Ga? or Ga on the way back iraq?

If you prep the truck maaco will spray it for a few hundred dollars and it will be pretty decent

I actually have 30 days leave. Everyone gets 30 days after a deployment.

Anyways, I'm stationed at Ft. Stewart in Georgia. After this deployment, I'm taking my 30 days leave and heading home to California. 3 weeks in Cali, then I'm allowing myself the last week to drive the truck back to Ft. Stewart. 2800 miles in a dually with a 454 and on 39" Michelins...Gonna be an epic road trip for sure. Driving that far in a 21yo truck, allowing myself 7 days is a good idea I think. I hope nothin blows up. :haha:

Fixed it. :waytogo:

Actually, Maaco was the thought for my truck. But I'm not looking for a nice paint job just a color change. Plus my truck regularly sees tree scratches, dings, dents, scrapes, etc... And with that said, it's just fine the way it is.

Start a road trip thread here in the garage when you start to head back... That way all the CK5ers can keep track of you and if you have any problems you might get help from members that are close to where you're at... Having it in here will allow non paying users to lend a hand if they need to...

Good luck and have fun... Oh, and lots of pics...:D
